Sub-Saharan Africa’s crypto activity grew by 52 per cent year-over-year, with Nigeria leading as the region’s largest market.

The country alone accounted for nearly $96 billion in transactions, driven by growing demand for alternatives to traditional banking and protection against the weakening naira.

Economic pressure is accelerating crypto adoption

The rapid rise of crypto in Nigeria and Ethiopia is closely linked to economic realities shaping user behaviour.

In Nigeria, persistent inflation, foreign exchange shortages, and limited access to dollars have pushed individuals and businesses toward digital assets. Crypto is increasingly used not just for trading, but for everyday financial needs such as savings, remittances, and online payments.

Ethiopia is seeing a similar shift. The country’s currency depreciation, estimated at around 30 per cent in 2024, has triggered a sharp rise in stablecoin adoption, with adoption reportedly growing by about 180 per cent as users seek to preserve value.

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, crypto is no longer viewed as a speculative asset. Instead, it is becoming a practical financial tool for navigating unstable economic conditions and limited banking infrastructure.

Stablecoins are driving Africa’s crypto transactions

Stablecoins have emerged as the backbone of crypto activity in Africa, accounting for roughly 43 per cent of the region’s total transaction volume.

These dollar-pegged digital assets are widely used in countries such as Nigeria and Ethiopia to hedge against currency volatility while enabling faster, cheaper transactions. For many users, stablecoins offer a reliable alternative to holding local currencies that are prone to rapid depreciation.

They are also becoming essential for businesses, particularly for cross-border trade and treasury management, where speed and cost efficiency are critical.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Vera Songwe highlighted the growing impact of stablecoins on financial inclusion.

“Stablecoins are lowering fees and settlement times, allowing people and small businesses to transfer money in minutes, not days,” she said.

As crypto usage accelerates, regulators across Africa are beginning to catch up with clearer frameworks and policies.

Nigeria, once known for its restrictive stance, is now taking a more structured approach. The country’s Investments and Securities Act of 2025 classifies digital assets as securities, allowing licensed virtual asset providers to operate under regulatory oversight.

This shift signals growing recognition of crypto’s role in the financial system and the need to balance innovation with consumer protection.

The region is believed to be moving beyond early experimentation into real-world application. Farzam Ehsani noted that Africa’s growth is driven by necessity rather than hype.

“Africa is not merely adopting crypto but leading its practical application to solve pressing financial needs,” he said after the Africa Tech Summit Nairobi.

Africa’s crypto surge is just getting started

With rising adoption in Nigeria and Ethiopia, Sub-Saharan Africa is quickly becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing crypto markets.

Experts like Daniel Katz said the growth curve is set to accelerate even further as regulation improves and access expands.

“Adoption will hit hard this year, and the curve will be exponential rather than gradual,” he said.

As economic pressures persist and digital infrastructure improves, crypto is shifting from an alternative asset to a core part of Africa’s financial ecosystem, powered by innovation, necessity, and a rapidly growing user base.
