The Trust by Design Fintech Challenge 2026, launched by global nonprofit Accion in partnership with GRID Impact and supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is calling for applications from fintech firms worldwide. The initiative aims to spotlight market-ready solutions that prioritise trust as both a social necessity and a competitive advantage in financial services.
Bridging the Trust Gap in Financial Services
Despite rapid growth in digital finance, trust remains a critical barrier, particularly for women. Globally, hundreds of millions of women remain excluded from formal financial systems, often due to concerns around fraud, data misuse, and lack of transparency.
Organisers say the challenge seeks to address these issues by promoting fintech solutions that actively reduce harm and improve user confidence. “The Challenge identifies and rewards market-tested fintech solutions that build trust with women customers,” Accion said, emphasising the need for safer, more inclusive systems.
By encouraging trust-centred design, the initiative aims to demonstrate that user protection and business growth can go hand in hand.
Who Can Apply
The competition is open to organisations already operating in the financial services ecosystem with live, market-tested products. Eligible applicants include fintech startups, financial institutions, microfinance providers, and technology companies embedding services such as payments, credit, savings, or insurance.
Applicants are expected to show clear evidence of traction and measurable impact, particularly in improving safety, transparency, and user engagement, especially among women and underserved populations.
Unlike early-stage idea competitions, the challenge targets solutions that are already delivering results in real-world markets.
Funding, Recognition, and Global Exposure
Winners of the Trust by Design Fintech Challenge will receive both financial and strategic support. The top prize stands at $50,000, while three additional finalists will each receive $10,000.
Beyond funding, selected participants will gain global visibility, industry recognition, and access to influential networks within the fintech ecosystem. Finalists may also be featured in industry publications and invited to high-profile events, including the Fintech for Inclusion Global Summit in London.
Redefining Financial Inclusion
The challenge reflects a broader shift in the fintech industry, from simply expanding access to ensuring that services are safe, transparent, and user-centred.
Organisers argue that trust is no longer optional but essential for scaling digital financial solutions. Companies that prioritise ethical design and customer protection often see stronger retention, higher engagement, and more sustainable growth.
As applications open till May 22, 2026, the Trust by Design Fintech Challenge positions itself as a global platform for redefining how financial systems serve women, rewarding innovators who are not just building products but building confidence in the future of finance.
