Africa’s largest mobile network provider, MTN Group, is set to host an Africa-first- virtual concert in Ubuntuland, Africa’s metaverse, on 30 November 2022. Earlier in February, the group emerged as the first company on the continent to purchase some plots of digital land in the virtual reality world — metaverse, Ubuntuland. With a vision to create dedicated environments for creating unique immersive experiences for its customers.

Experts analyzed that the Metaverse could contribute $40 billion to Sub-Saharan Africa’s GDP by 2031. The Metaverse will provide a massive opportunity for African businesses to communicate distinctive stories in compelling ways.

According to Bernice Samuels, Executive: Group Marketing at MTN Group, “The presence of the MTN Group in the African metaverse will be known as altMTN.” altMTN enables us to support further our mission to lead digital platforms and foster African innovation, and will, over time, incorporate live events, retail, gaming, and learning. We will leverage our cooperation with The Mic: Africa to stage Africa’s first virtual music concert in the Metaverse to increase awareness and acceptance of this new place to welcome everyone to altMTN.”

Tickets up for grab for customers

Samuel continues, “Many people still regard virtual worlds and environments as perplexing and inaccessible. Therefore, we are delighted to offer the altMTN experience to market in a form that can be accessed through mobile, tablet, PC, or VR device. We will hold a competition for our launch event with our consumers, offering them the opportunity to win individual concert tickets.”

“We believe that by capitalizing on a key passion on the continent, namely music, we can actively draw our customers into the environment not only to experience it firsthand but also to continue to improve altMTN as this developing technology growingly interconnects and develops, enabling us to unlock the full benefits for our customers. The metaverse has a broad range of chances to strengthen further and highlight African creativity, and we are pleased to be pioneers on the continent,” he added.

Several organizations, including some of the world’s major corporations such as Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, and others) have already pounced on the bandwagon in order to improve their consumers’ digital experiences.

The presence of MTN Group on the platform is anticipated to motivate other African companies (particularly those in technology and ICT) to follow suit in the near future.

What to know about Metaverse

Metaverse, the most recent technological breakthrough, is a fictitious depiction of the Internet that exists as a single, ubiquitous, and immersive virtual environment made possible by adopting virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headgear.

Users not only interact with the computer-generated world in the Metaverse, but they also connect with other users and indulge in ordinary everyday activities such as going to school, going to work, watching concerts, shopping at stores/malls, and playing games, among others.
