Why Checker targets the African stablecoin market

As more African markets clarify how digital asset businesses can operate, stablecoin payments startup Checker is positioning itself as a trusted platform layer for regulated financial institutions.

In 2025, Kenya introduced its VASP framework and has since released the 2026 draft regulations operationalising the Act. Ghana’s Parliament also passed its VASP Act, creating a formal legal framework for virtual assets.

“This funding allows us to accelerate our mission to enable financial institutions from Brazil and Kenya, to Hong Kong and the United States, to transform how foreign exchange, payments, trading, and investment products are built,” said Jack Chong, CEO of Checker.

Founded in 2025 by Chong, Nathan Crocker, Justin McMahan, and Michael Zaczyk, Checker builds infrastructure that enables regulated banks, remittance providers, and neobanks to plug into global stablecoin liquidity via a single API.

The company acts as a payment orchestration layer, removing the need for institutions to integrate separately with multiple providers across different markets.

Its network already supports 75 currencies, including Nigerian naira, Kenyan shilling, Tanzanian shilling, Ghanaian cedi, and Francophone West African CFA franc.

“We’re building the network-of-networks infrastructure for the stablecoin era,” said Isaac Umejiaku, Head of Africa sales at Checker. “With one integration, we connect African financial institutions to multiple payment providers, cross-border payment businesses, and banks globally, dramatically reducing settlement times and fees.”

Competition grows in stablecoin payments

Stablecoin payments are gaining momentum across Africa as financial institutions explore blockchain-based alternatives for cross-border settlements. In July 2025, the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System launched the African Currency Marketplace on the Bantu blockchain network to support direct exchange of African currencies without relying on the US dollar.

In October 2025, Flutterwave selected Polygon as its blockchain partner for stablecoin-powered cross-border payments.

Over the past year, startup Checker said it onboarded institutional clients, including Rail, Braza Bank, and Belo, while scaling to $3 billion in processing volume.

Checker generates revenue through commissions on transactions processed through its infrastructure and competes with firms such as Conduit in the race to build backend rails for global stablecoin payments.
