The competition, organised by the Africa Centre for Energy Policy as part of the Future of Energy Conference, is inviting applications from innovators developing practical solutions for Africa’s energy sector. Organisers say the programme will spotlight ideas that can improve energy access, sustainability and efficiency in underserved communities.

Push for African Energy Solutions

The challenge arrives at a time when African governments and investors are under pressure to expand reliable access to electricity while cutting emissions. Across the continent, millions of people still lack stable power, creating demand for renewable and low-carbon alternatives.

According to the organisers, the initiative seeks innovations that can address problems such as unreliable electricity supply, limited rural electrification, and rising energy costs. The competition will also provide innovators with opportunities to connect with investors, policymakers and industry leaders during the conference in Accra, Ghana.

Applicants are expected to present scalable ideas in areas including renewable energy, clean cooking, energy efficiency, mini-grids, smart power systems, and sustainable mobility solutions. Young entrepreneurs, startups, researchers and innovators from across Africa are encouraged to apply.

Funding, Mentorship and Investor Access

Selected participants will receive mentorship and technical support to refine their projects ahead of the final pitch session. Organisers say top entries may also secure funding support and industry partnerships that could help move solutions from the concept stage into deployment.

The final pitch event is scheduled for the Future of Energy Conference in August 2026. Finalists will have the opportunity to showcase their ideas to investors and energy stakeholders from across Africa and beyond.

Applications for the innovation challenge opened in April and are expected to close at the end of May 2026, according to details released by the organisers.

Youth Innovation Takes Centre Stage

The programme also reflects growing attention on youth-driven innovation within Africa’s clean energy sector. Organisations supporting climate and energy entrepreneurship have increasingly argued that African innovators are best positioned to develop solutions tailored to local realities.

Energy experts have repeatedly stressed that expanding electricity access remains central to economic growth on the continent. Nigerian business leader Tony Elumelu recently argued that Africa needs stronger investment in power and infrastructure to unlock development opportunities.

The FEC Innovation Challenge combines funding, mentorship, and investor exposure to help a new generation of African entrepreneurs build solutions that tackle long-standing energy gaps and support cleaner economic growth across the continent.
