Liquid Intelligent Technologies, Microsoft, and South Africa’s Department of Communications and Digital Technologies launched a solar-powered mobile digital lab at the Royal Bafokeng Institute to equip young people in the Northwest province with digital and AI skills for the modern economy.
The initiative is designed to provide reliable, sustainable access to technology and learning in communities where infrastructure limitations have historically restricted digital opportunities. The project also responds to rising demand for AI and digital skills across underserved areas in South Africa.
AI and Microsoft Skills Training
The curriculum focuses on digital literacy and AI foundations, covering Microsoft 365, Teams, Copilot, and AI Fluency. The current cohort of learners is completing a three-month intensive programme focused on mastering the Microsoft Power Platform, leading to internationally recognised certifications in Power Platform Fundamentals, Functional Consultant, and Developer.
Ziaad Suleman, senior VP and CEO of Cassava Technologies South Africa and Botswana, said digital inclusion initiatives must be scalable and sustainable to create long-term economic impact.
“The Mobile Digital Lab allows us to reach even more young people with meaningful digital learning opportunities. Through this partnership, we are empowering communities with intelligent technologies and skills that support participation in the modern economy,” added Ziaad Suleman.
Expanding Digital Inclusion
The launch builds on the success of the IDSC, which has enrolled and trained 515 learners to date, achieved a 96% pass rate, and helped 149 learners secure employment opportunities directly linked to the digital skills acquired through the programme.
Enki Pitsoe, CEO of the Royal Bafokeng Institute, welcomed the initiative as a direct investment in the community’s youth.
“This mobile digital lab brings world-class technology, connectivity and learning opportunities directly into our community, helping young people build practical digital skills that can support long-term economic participation,” he said.
The initiative highlights the role of public-private partnerships in expanding digital connectivity, skills development, and economic opportunities within the Royal Bafokeng community.
In April 2026, Cassava Technologies’ cloud and cybersecurity business Liquid C2 partnered with Google Cloud to launch what the companies described as Africa’s first Google Cloud-powered Partner Experience Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. The latest launch further reflects Liquid Intelligent Technologies’ broader push to extend digital skills access beyond the country’s major urban centres.
