Adobe has officially launched the Photoshop Beta app for Android smartphones and tablets, marking a major milestone for mobile creators worldwide. Available for free download starting June 3, 2025, this new app brings many core Photoshop features familiar to desktop users directly to Android devices, powered by Adobe’s Firefly AI technology.

This launch ends years of anticipation and offers Android users a professional-grade photo editing experience on the go.

Photoshop beta for Android: Desktop-level editing on mobile

Android users have long awaited a full-fledged Photoshop app, and Adobe’s new beta version delivers a robust set of tools that mirror the desktop experience. This program has layers, masks, selection tools, and complex brushes like Spot Healing Brush and Clone Stamp. Thanks to Adobe Firefly AI, the app also offers Generative Fill, which allows users to add, remove, or alter image elements using simple text prompts, a feature previously exclusive to desktop Photoshop.

The app supports both smartphones and tablets running Android 11 or newer, with a minimum requirement of 6GB RAM, though Adobe recommends 8GB or more for optimal performance. This significantly improved over previous Adobe mobile apps, which offered limited support for Android tablets. Users can blend images, apply adjustment layers, and control blend modes, enabling complex edits and creative effects on mobile devices.

Adobe has made the beta app free during the initial period, including access to an extensive library of Adobe Stock assets. This contrasts with the iPhone version, which requires a subscription. This generous approach encourages widespread adoption and feedback to refine the app before its release.

Empowering mobile creators with AI and accessibility

Adobe designed the Photoshop Beta app for Android to be intuitive and accessible. It targets professional creatives and casual users who prefer editing on their phones. The app’s interface adapts to mobile screens while retaining powerful editing capabilities. Users can create collages, design social media posts, retouch photos, and experiment with AI-generated art using the integrated Firefly tools.

The AI-powered Tap Select tool allows quick isolation or removal of objects, while features like Magic Wand and Object Select enable precise selections. The app also includes tutorials accessible via a light bulb icon, helping new users learn Photoshop’s complexities without frustration.

Adobe’s focus on mobile creativity reflects a broader trend of creators relying on smartphones as primary tools for content production. By making professional photo editing tools available on Android, Adobe is expanding its reach to a global audience, especially younger users who demand flexibility and creativity on the move.

The Photoshop Beta app supports exporting projects in multiple formats, including JPG, PNG, TIF, and layered PSD files. This facilitates seamless workflow integration with desktop Photoshop or other creative software. Users can also quickly save and share their work using the app’s Quick Export feature.

This launch represents Adobe’s most comprehensive attempt yet to bring Photoshop’s full power to mobile devices, surpassing previous efforts like Photoshop Express and the now-discontinued Photoshop Touch app. With continuous updates planned, the app is poised to evolve rapidly based on user feedback during the beta phase.

Adobe Photoshop Beta for Android is out on Google Play for supported devices. On Android, you can experience professional picture editing anywhere inspiration strikes.
