Adobe announced on Tuesday that it is rolling out enhanced AI-powered image editing features in Photoshop to transform the work of designers and photographers.

These updates harness Adobe’s Firefly AI models to increase productivity and deliver more natural editing results, making Photoshop an even more powerful tool for creative professionals.

Generative upscale and Harmonise: Making images look right anywhere

One of the headline features is Generative Upscale, which lets users upscale images to up to 8 megapixels.

This improvement gives new life to old photos or low-resolution images by restoring details without sacrificing quality. It’s ideal for print projects or adapting assets across various platforms.

Another major update is the introduction of Harmonize, based on the earlier teased Project Perfect Blend. Harmonize intelligently adjusts new objects added to images so they seamlessly blend with the existing scene.

It modifies colour tones, shadows, and lighting automatically. For example, if you add a sofa to a room photo, Harmonize will tweak the lighting and shadows on the couch to look naturally placed rather than pasted in. This reduces tedious manual editing and streamlines compositing in Photoshop.

Better object removal with AI precision

Photoshop’s improved object removal tool uses AI to remove unwanted items from images while filling in the background more convincingly.

Unlike before, which sometimes left strange artefacts by trying to analyse the entire scene, the updated tool focuses specifically on the area of the removed object.

This focus results in a background fill that looks cleaner and natural, eliminating distracting remnants or patchy textures. With this tool, users can instantly remove wires, cables, or distracting people from photos.

Users can also choose different versions of the Firefly AI model to suit their editing needs, offering flexibility for various workflows.

These new features are available in beta for desktop and web versions of Photoshop, with Harmonize also accessible on the iOS app through an early access program.

Adobe’s senior director of product management for Photoshop, Shambhavi Kadam, highlighted the practical impact: “We have talked to photographers, designers, and content creators to understand what slows them down. These new features save time, remove friction, and automate time-consuming tasks” .

Photoshop’s AI-powered enhancements show how artificial intelligence continues to reshape creative tools by making complex image editing faster and more accessible. With these updates, Photoshop users can expect smoother workflows and more realistic, professional results with less manual effort.
