AMS-IX, one of the world’s premier Internet Exchange operators, and MDXi, a subsidiary of Equinix, have joined forces to launch a new Internet Exchange in Lagos, Nigeria.

The new AMS-IX Lagos Internet Exchange is housed at MDXi, a carrier-neutral data centre owned and operated by Equinix. Under the terms of the collaboration agreement, MDXi will serve as AMS-IX’s commercial partner as well as the regional sales and marketing arm for AMS-IX Lagos. The exchange’s technical and operational management is the responsibility of AMS-IX.

On Monday, MDXi announced that AMS-IX Lagos would serve as a major content hub for West Africa by enabling regional and local Internet service providers, carriers, and Internet exchanges to aggregate content from major global Content Delivery Networks, hosting companies, and application providers. MDXi, an Equinix Company, and AMS-IX will work over the next few months to create relationships with regional telecom providers and IXs in order to serve better and grow local economies.

AMS-IX Within the next month, AMS-IX and MDXi, an Equinix Company, will transfer and onboard the West Africa Internet Exchange (WAF-IX)’s existing connected networks, allowing Lagos to debut with more than 25 linked networks. Among the largest CDNs and application providers with networks connected to WAF-IX are Cloudflare, Microsoft, and Google.

The Companies View on the Launch

CEO of AMS-IX, Peter van Burgel, said: “We intend to add value to the local carriers and IX’s by attracting even more content players to the region and support the local connectivity community. This is a very exciting project for us as we see it as an important stepping stone for bringing low-latency affordable Internet available for the West-African region.”

Director, MDXi, an Equinix Company, Funke Opeke, said: “The partnership enables MDXi to deliver value to the rich ecosystem of network operators, carriers, content providers, cloud services providers, and enterprises that we have present in the data centre. The AMS-IX partnership will help MDXi consolidate its role as a content hub not just for Nigeria but for Francophone and English-speaking West and Central Africa.”
