Angola and India have agreed to strengthen cooperation in energy and beyond during Angolan President João Lourenço’s visit to India on Saturday. The leaders met at the India-Angola Business Forum in New Delhi to sign multiple agreements to boost ties in oil and gas, renewable energy, defence, digital tech, and education.
The visit marks 40 years of diplomatic relations and reflects both nations’ commitment to a modern, mutually beneficial partnership.
Angola joins International Solar Alliance as ties with India grow
A milestone from the visit was Angola becoming the 123rd member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA). This move signals Angola’s commitment to renewable energy and opens the door to solar investment and technology transfer from India.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed the development, emphasising that clean energy is central to the India-Africa partnership.
India also invited Angola to join other green global efforts, such as the Global Biofuels Alliance and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, further aligning their goals around climate resilience and sustainable infrastructure.
Green energy meets growth in Angola
President Lourenço highlighted Angola’s ambitions to become a regional hub for renewable energy, thanks to its vast natural resources and expanding transport links like the Lobito Corridor. With access to regional markets through the AfCFTA and SADC, Angola is positioning itself as a launchpad for green projects across southern Africa.
Indian companies were encouraged to explore opportunities in Angola’s renewable energy space, especially solar, critical minerals, and biofuels to power industries and communities.
India’s clean tech expertise
India pledged support in digital public infrastructure, space technology, and clean energy training, offering Angola the tools to scale its renewable sector. A $200 million line of credit was approved to strengthen infrastructure supporting Angola’s energy transition.
Both leaders agreed that the future lies in clean, inclusive, and technology-driven growth. With this renewed alliance, Angola and India are turning shared sustainability goals into long-term action, lighting the way for energy cooperation in the Global South.
