Apple announced on Tuesday that Jeff Williams, the company’s Chief Operating Officer, will step down from his role later this month as part of a planned retirement.
Williams, who has been with Apple for nearly 27 years, will continue to work at the company until his official retirement later this year. During that time, he will oversee the design team and Apple Watch initiatives while reporting directly to CEO Tim Cook.
Leadership change: Sabih Khan to take over as COO
Sabih Khan, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Operations, will succeed Jeff Williams as COO. Khan has been with Apple for 30 years and has led the company’s global supply chain, procurement, manufacturing, and logistics since 2019.
Tim Cook praised Khan as a “brilliant strategist” who has played a central role in pioneering advanced technologies and expanding Apple’s manufacturing footprint in the United States.
Under Khan’s leadership, Apple has also made significant strides in environmental sustainability, reducing its carbon footprint by over 60 per cent.
Williams expressed confidence in Khan’s abilities, calling him “the most talented operations executive on the planet” and stating that he believes Apple’s future is in “incredible hands” under Khan’s leadership.
Jeff Williams’ impact on Apple’s growth
Jeff Williams has been a key figure in Apple’s rise over the past two decades. He joined Apple in 1998 as head of Worldwide Procurement and became COO in 2015.
He was instrumental in launching and overseeing the Apple Watch and architecting Apple’s health initiatives.
Williams also helped develop one of the world’s most respected global supply chains, securing vital partnerships with suppliers like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and Corning Inc.
Tim Cook highlighted Williams’ contributions: “Apple wouldn’t be what it is without him. He has led our world-class team of designers with great wisdom, heart, and dedication.” Williams said, “I have a deep love for Apple. Working with all the amazing people at this company has been a privilege of a lifetime”.
With Williams stepping down, the Apple Watch and health initiatives will temporarily remain under his oversight until his retirement, after which those teams will report directly to Cook.
This leadership transition marks the end of an era for Apple’s operations but also signals continuity with Sabih Khan’s appointment, ensuring the company’s operations remain in experienced hands.
