Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is continuing its mission to remove the barriers that prevent people from gaining access to cloud skills training, recently inaugurated its first international AWS Skills Centre in Cape Town, South Africa.

AWS Skills Centres are Amazon’s dedicated, in-person cloud learning spaces created for anybody who is curious about cloud computing, career options in the sector, and how to acquire the skills to achieve their professional objectives. These learning spaces are open to anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in cloud computing.

Explore how cloud computing technology is being used to power everything from weather forecasting to smart homes is something that can be done by everyone in the community, regardless of their background, level of education, or social standing.

Remarks

Premier of the Western Cape Alan Winde, Director-General of Higher Education and Training Nkosinathi Sishi, Provincial Minister Mireille Wenger, Member of Mayoral Committee James Vos, and AWS leaders Maureen Lonergan, Tanuja Randery, and Rashika Ramlal all expressed their excitement about the new learning centre and the benefits it will provide to the surrounding area.

“We look forward to working with AWS to bring powerful training resources to the citizens of South Africa,” said Winde.

“By investing in our people and their future, we are also investing in South Africa’s future and advancing our stature in the global economy.”

“AWS is committed to removing barriers for people to access the skills training they need to grow their careers,” remarked Lonergan, vice president of AWS Training and Certification.

“The Cape Town region is rife with talent, and upskilling the workforce can play a key role in driving innovation, catalyzing economic growth, and accelerating digital transformation across South Africa.”

Features of the AWS centre

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Skills Centre in Cape Town is the third facility of its kind to open, joining those in Seattle and Arlington, Virginia. Every centre provides an extensive selection of cloud training and career exploration events that are both free of charge and available to the general public.

Each area is intended to captivate visitors by demonstrating how cloud computing is being used to power a variety of fields and applications, from meteorological forecasting to robotics. Visitors gain knowledge by taking part in a variety of activities that are both enjoyable and participatory.

The Cloud Discovery Space features eight interactive exhibits that provide light on the ways in which the cloud facilitates a variety of activities, including gaming, machine learning, cybersecurity, and more.

The principles of cloud computing can be learned in a live, instructor-led training session offered by AWS professionals, which participants can attend in person or virtually.

Learners can validate their abilities and enhance their employability by earning an industry-recognized credential by preparing for and passing the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification exam, which can be prepared for with the use of training and other resources.

In addition, the centre provides career counselling and organises networking events with regional businesses and organisations that focus on workforce development in order to connect people with organisations that can help them find jobs.
