On Monday, Bluesky, a decentralised social media platform, announced the introduction of a new “Video” tab on user profiles.

This feature, part of the Bluesky 1.97 update, allows users to easily view all videos posted by a profile in one place. The tab is next to the “Media” section and includes original videos and content pulled from other social networks like TikTok and Instagram.

Bluesky’s focus on video content follows its recent introduction of custom video feeds similar to those found on TikTok and Instagram Reels.

This move is part of Bluesky’s efforts to enhance its video capabilities and potentially offer a new revenue stream through premium features like longer or higher-quality videos.

New features and updates

The Bluesky 1.97 update includes several enhancements beyond the video tab. It introduces a quick menu option to block users or delete conversations after reporting a direct message, improving user safety and privacy. Additionally, the update enhances translation capabilities, providing better accuracy and speed.

Developer interest and user feedback

Developers are interested in building video-first Bluesky clients, and several apps, such as Skeets and Flashes, are in development.

However, not all users are enthusiastic about the new video focus, with some requesting the ability to turn off the video tab on their profiles or prioritise other features like an edit button.

Mark Cuban, a well-known entrepreneur, has expressed interest in backing a video app built on the AT Protocol, which powers Bluesky. This interest highlights the potential for Bluesky to become a platform for innovative video-based applications.
