As revealed on October 17, OpenAI has begun showing off a Windows app for its AI chatbot, ChatGPT.

Voice capabilities and the most recent GPT-4o model have been added to the official ChatGPT desktop client, which was released on MacOS in June. Since then, the app has undergone multiple updates.

As of now, the new Windows application is exclusively available to ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team, and Edu users.

OpenAI describes it as an “early version” scheduled to be rolled out before the end of the year.

What’s new with ChatGPT desktop?

ChatGPT’s desktop version integrates seamlessly into your computer workflow, unlike the web and mobile versions. To enter a chat interface and ask the AI, hold Alt+Space.

MacOS lacks fast ChatGPT screenshot sending. This helps with speedy site content, code, and design input. In games, it may propose moves. It should reach Windows.

For what’s coming next, the main reason to switch to a local app instead of the web version. You will soon be able to use Advanced Voice in the desktop version. This will let you hold and continue a chat with the AI while you do other things.

Advance Voice may soon add screen recording to snapshots so you can continue talking as it records your screen activities. It can play or give live feedback during calls.

ChatGPT for Windows: Download and Use

Microsoft Store offers Windows program downloads. According to OpenAI, the software works on most Windows 10 devices and is easy to integrate for web-savvy ChatGPT users.

ChatGPT Windows, like Mac, enables you use programs in a separate window. Easy access with Alt+Space. After restarting the app, the window stays but moves to the bottom middle. OpenAI DALL-E 3 uploads, condenses, and pictures files. OpenAI states that the companion chat shortcut can not be modified or used if it’s already allocated to another Windows app.

But there are differences. Advanced Voice Mode, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive login for Context Connectors and third-party authentication in the GPT Builder are missing from the “early version”.

By default, the company does not use client content from its commercial products, such as the API and ChatGPT Enterprise, to increase model performance. Users can provide data to train models.

ChatGPT vs. Windows’ Copilot AI is mostly a question of preference. Both employ LLMs but Copilot’s Microsoft connectors can be useful or irritating.
