Google released Chrome OS 138, a significant update that enhances Chromebook customisation and productivity.
One standout feature is the long-awaited custom wallpaper sync, which allows users to automatically sync wallpapers, including downloaded images and photos, across all their Chrome OS devices.
This ends the limitation where only built-in themes or system wallpapers could be synced.
Seamless syncing and AI-powered tools elevate Chromebook use
Chrome OS 138 introduces Desk Sync, which helps users pick up their work exactly where they left off when switching devices.
It restores all windows, tabs, and even cookies from the previous session, making multi-device workflows smoother than ever.
Users can enable Desk Sync in settings or choose to skip it. This feature is especially beneficial for shared devices and frontline workers in sectors like healthcare and hospitality.
The update adds AI-driven capabilities exclusive to Chromebook Plus models and syncing benefits.
The new AI Wallpaper maker lets users generate unique backgrounds with text prompts or opt for the AI-powered “Inspire Me” mode to receive random wallpaper creations. Another AI feature called Help Me Read simplifies complicated or jargon-heavy text.
Users can select a passage, right-click, and get an easier-to-understand version instantly.
Accessibility improves with slow keys and more
Accessibility is boosted in Chrome OS 138 through the introduction of Slow Keys, an option designed for users with limited dexterity.
This feature requires keys to be pressed and held quickly before registering, preventing accidental keystrokes caused by hand tremors or other conditions.
Additionally, improvements to screen reader navigation and application announcements enhance overall usability for users relying on assistive technology.
Google has also expanded device management flexibility by allowing administrators to turn off specific apps and features, tailoring Chromebook selectively for organisational needs.
The update was rolled out starting July 26, 2025, and became available in stages over the following days. Chrome OS 138 marks a meaningful step toward more personalized, efficient, and inclusive Chromebook experiences.
