Comoros has officially launched two digital education platforms, E-Shiyo and E-Msomo, to expand access to learning and improve school governance nationwide.

The announcement was made on June 5 by the Ministry of National Education, in collaboration with the National Agency for Digital Development (ANADEN), with support from UNICEF Comoros.

The initiative falls under the broader “Comoros Digital 2028” strategy, which aims to grow the digital economy and ensure equitable access to essential services through the use of technology.

E-Shiyo provides online textbooks for young learners

E-Shiyo offers a digital library of validated textbooks designed explicitly for pre-primary and primary school students nationwide. The platform is accessible via smartphones, tablets, and computers, allowing students to study from anywhere at any time. According to ANADEN Director General Said Mouinou, the platform responds to a key need: ensuring fair and modern access to educational resources in every Comorian school.

By digitising textbooks, E-Shiyo addresses the shortage and degradation of physical learning materials, particularly in remote areas. UNICEF Comoros supports the platform as part of its efforts to promote inclusive education and digital equity. The project is expected to help reduce disparities in access to learning, support teachers, and prepare students for a more connected world.

E-Msomo digitises school administration and tracks student progress

E-Msomo is an administrative tool that automates core school operations. It enables online entry of grades, the automatic creation of report cards, and secure access for students, parents, and teaching staff. Each student receives a unique identifier to facilitate academic tracking and prevent the manipulation of academic records.

Minister of National Education Bacar Mvoulana emphasised that E-Msomo will strengthen transparency and accountability in education. The platform also helps combat fake report cards and simplifies the monitoring of student transfers. Currently in its pilot phase in selected public institutions, E-Msomo is expected to expand further with UNICEF’s continued involvement.

Beyond digitising paperwork, E-Msomo empowers policymakers with real-time, reliable data to make informed decisions about school performance and resource allocation.

Digital education reform tied to national development goals

The rollout of E-Shiyo and E-Msomo marks a milestone in the implementation of Comoros Digital 2028, which aims to increase the digital sector’s share of GDP to 5 percent by 2028. With Africa’s e-learning market projected to surpass $1.5 billion by 2030, Comoros is aligning itself with a continental trend toward tech-driven education reform.

However, challenges remain. Internet penetration in Comoros stands at just 35.7 percent, highlighting the need for broader connectivity, teacher training, and better access to digital devices. As part of its next steps, the government plans to invest in school equipment, ensure data privacy, and strengthen the digital literacy of educators.

These platforms are not just digital tools; they represent a strategic investment in the nation’s educational future. With E-Shiyo and E-Msomo, Comoros is setting the stage for a smarter, fairer, and more resilient education system.
