In a high-level discussion with Hon. Felix Mutati, Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, and Czech Deputy Prime Minister Marian Jureka on Monday, the Czech Republic reaffirmed its commitment to furthering cybersecurity and digital transformation in Zambia.
This partnership is expected to expedite Zambia’s digital inclusion through targeted scholarships in cutting-edge disciplines such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI), technology transfer, and capacity building.
Czech support accelerates Zambia’s digital transformation
Zambia has made remarkable progress in digital development, being one of the few African countries to publish an AI strategy and roll out 5G technology nationwide. Hon. Felix Mutati highlighted that Zambia is leveraging satellite technology like Starlink to improve national connectivity.
The government has also enacted key legislation, including the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Law, to create an enabling environment for digital growth and trust in cyberspace.
The Czech Republic’s involvement includes scholarships for Zambian professionals to pursue degrees in Information Technology, AI, and cybersecurity, helping build local expertise.
“We want Zambian professionals to perfect their skills as the country prepares to embrace artificial intelligence,” said Pavel Prochazka, Czech Ambassador to Zambia. This educational support is part of a broader effort to equip Zambia’s workforce for the digital age.
Strengthening cybersecurity and digital public services
A major focus of the cooperation is developing tools to combat cybersecurity threats. Minister Mutati emphasized the importance of building trust and confidence online, stating, “Our next phase is focused on developing tools to address cybersecurity threats. Cooperation with the Czech Republic will be vital in creating solutions to protect citizens online”.
The Czech Deputy Prime Minister echoed this, supporting technology transfer and capacity building, specifically in data management, processing, and cybersecurity.
Beyond security, the partnership aims to digitize public records and improve public administration efficiency across Zambia’s provinces. Jureka noted that digitalization in agriculture, healthcare, and education can bring substantial benefits.
He shared how AI integration in the Czech Republic has enabled his ministry to reduce workforce size by 10 percent while delivering faster, more efficient services.
The Czech Republic also urged Zambia to raise public awareness about new cyber laws to help curb cybercrime, reinforcing the need for a comprehensive approach to digital safety.
This collaboration sets a strong foundation for Zambia’s digital future, clearly focusing on safeguarding citizens and enhancing government services through technology.
