Google Labs, the tech giant’s innovation hub, unveiled an exciting web-based project named GenChess on November 27, 2024. This experimental platform adds a creative twist to the traditional game of chess by integrating Google’s image generation model, Gemini Imagen 3. This model enables players to design customised chess pieces through text prompts.

How GenChess works

To explore GenChess, users need to log in with a Gmail account. Once signed in, they can click the “Generate” button and input a theme for their chess set. Themes range from culinary inspirations like sushi or pizza to abstract concepts.

GenChess offers two distinct styles for chess sets. The Classic style resembles a traditional chessboard, featuring familiar designs. On the other hand, the Creative style allows for more abstract and artistic chess pieces, enabling users to experiment with imaginative ideas. Once a set is generated, users can refine individual pieces. For instance, if the king’s appearance doesn’t meet expectations, players can provide additional text prompts to tweak its design.

After finalising their custom chess set, players can generate an opponent. In testing, for example, a user-created sushi-themed chess set was paired with a taco-inspired set controlled by an AI bot. Players can select from three difficulty levels—easy, medium, and challenging—and choose between two timer options: 5/3 or 10/0.

A blend of AI, design, and chess

GenChess showcases a seamless collaboration between artificial intelligence, creative design, and the strategic world of chess. A Google spokesperson emphasised its purpose, describing it as a way to “highlight how AI, design, and chess can converge, making it possible for anyone to create and play with unique chess sets.”

Chess innovations beyond GenChess

In tandem with the launch of GenChess, Google announced four additional chess-related initiatives to coincide with the start of the World Chess Championship on Monday. One such initiative is Google’s partnership with the International Chess Federation (FIDE). This collaboration invites participants to take part in a coding challenge hosted on Kaggle, Google’s platform for data science and machine learning. The challenge encourages developers to create AI chess engines, adding a technical layer of engagement for enthusiasts.

Another upcoming feature is Chess Gem for Gemini, which is set to launch next month. This innovative conversational offering lets players play chess games within the Gemini app. Players can test their strategic skills against an advanced language model while enjoying light-hearted banter. However, this feature will only be accessible to Gemini Advanced subscribers.

A simple yet engaging experiment

With GenChess, Google continues to push the boundaries of AI integration in everyday activities, offering a playful yet functional experience for chess enthusiasts and casual players alike. The project enhances the gaming experience and demonstrates the creative potential of AI-driven tools.
