Digital Realty, LINX expand West Africa presence with new IXP-enabled data hub in Accra

Digital Realty and the London Internet Exchange (LINX) are deepening their footprint in West Africa with the launch of an IXP-enabled data hub in Accra, Ghana.

Positioned near key submarine cable landing stations, the new facility aims to enhance regional connectivity and support the continent’s accelerating digital transformation.

The launch of LINX Accra, Ghana’s first internet exchange point (IXP), is scheduled for July 3 and marks a critical step in expanding scalable, low-latency interconnection services across Africa.

The nearly completed Digital Realty facility, ACR2, is strategically located in downtown Accra near six submarine cable landing stations.

These subsea cables have helped establish Ghana as one of Africa’s most globally connected nations, contributing to rapid growth in the country’s digital ecosystem.

LINX Accra to launch

LINX Accra was announced in late 2024 and is expected to go live in the coming weeks. As Ghana’s first internet exchange point (IXP), it offers future-proof, scalable solutions designed to advance the regional digital landscape and improve network performance through peering and other low-latency services.

This new launch follows LINX’s successful expansion in Africa with LINX Nairobi in 2023 and LINX Mombasa earlier this year, both developed in partnership with iColo: A Digital Realty Company. LINX’s growing presence in Africa is part of its broader strategy to promote internet interconnection across the continent.

Nurani Nimpuno, Head of Global Engagement for LINX, stated, “We are excited to be embarking on this new journey with Digital Realty in Ghana. We have strong relations with our partners across our LINX hubs in the UK, US and Kenya, so I’m confident this extension of the relationship will be a success!”

LINX-Digital Realty long-term partnership

Digital Realty, the world’s largest global data centre provider, has long served as a key gateway for LINX’s interconnection solutions in London and Northern Virginia.

The company is now accelerating its efforts in Africa with operations in South Africa, Nigeria, Mozambique, Kenya, and Ghana, strengthening the continent’s internet backbone and supporting customers in the global digital economy.

“We’re pleased to be welcoming LINX to our new data centre in Ghana, a key milestone as we continue to strengthen interconnection across Africa. As demand for low-latency connectivity grows, this collaboration will play a critical role in helping to shape the region’s digital future by enabling greater access, resilience, and integration with the global internet fabric,” says Joseph Koranteng, Managing Director, Digital Realty in Ghana.

Digital Reality’s goal of facilitating Africa’s digital transformation

This declaration reaffirms Digital Realty’s overarching goal of hastening Africa’s digital transformation. Digital Realty, the largest global provider of data centres, is fortifying its open data centre platform to support Africa’s internet backbone and empower its customers, as well as to promote the region’s growth in the global digital economy.

The company is playing a crucial role in facilitating global integration and regional connectivity with operations in South Africa, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Kenya.

Digital Realty’s leadership in providing a truly global data centre platform was highlighted when it was recently named the top data centre provider in Africa and Europe on Cloudscene’s 2024-2025 Data Centre Ecosystem Leaderboard.

In the upcoming weeks, LINX Accra—a multi-site, resilient, and interconnected fabric—will go live, providing networks with a range of low-latency services, such as peering. The launch event will take place on July 3.
