The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) collaborated with stakeholders to underscore the transformative potential of technology in reshaping higher education for sustainable development during the 2024 UNESCO Forum on Higher Education in Africa: A Driver for Sustainable Development. Held in Nairobi from December 10 to 12, the forum was part of celebrations marking the African Union’s Year of Education 2024 under UNESCO’s auspices.

In a pre-recorded address, Said Adejumobi, Director of ECA’s Strategic Planning, Oversight, and Results Division, emphasised the need for robust educational reforms. He called for demand-driven curricula that integrate digital tools and strategies to reverse brain drain by engaging Africa’s talented diaspora. “Africa must leverage its diaspora’s expertise to foster regional innovation and transform higher education,” Adejumobi said.

Collaborations to boost technological skills and inclusion

The forum highlighted the importance of partnerships between universities and the private sector to enhance graduates’ entrepreneurial and technological skills. It also addressed the urgent need for policies supporting AI adoption, internet governance, and digital literacy to improve learning environments and expand access to quality education.

Shaping Africa’s future through education and technology

ECA officials provided detailed insights into how technology can reshape higher education. Victor Konde, ECA’s Scientific Affairs Officer, emphasised entrepreneurship policies, technology transfer, and sustainable funding to align education with Africa’s innovation ecosystems. Digitalisation Expert Thomas Senaji highlighted the role of ICT in education, including initiatives like Digital ID, cloud services, and AI to enhance learning and research. Ayenika Godheart Mbiydzenyuy, from the African Centre for Statistics, underlined the value of geospatial technology and data-driven strategies for informed educational planning.

ECA’s role in Africa’s development is critical in fostering a knowledge economy through educational innovation. By strengthening educational frameworks, ECA empowers African countries to build future-ready workforces that can lead in technology-driven sectors. The commission works closely with national governments, regional bodies, and international partners to ensure educational reforms are aligned with the needs of a rapidly digitizing world.

A sustainable and inclusive future for Africa

Looking ahead, ECA’s initiatives are laying the groundwork for an inclusive digital future. The commission continues to advocate for education systems that equip Africa’s youth with the skills and knowledge necessary for global competitiveness. By focusing on technology, ECA is ensuring that Africa’s educational institutions not only thrive but also drive the continent’s long-term sustainable growth. As Africa’s digital transformation accelerates, ECA’s efforts will be pivotal in empowering the next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders, helping to shape a prosperous future for the continent.
