Egypt took a major step toward becoming a regional clean tech leader on Thursday by launching a national initiative backed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
The program, spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Affairs Agency, is designed to accelerate the country’s energy transition, boost climate resilience, and attract private investment into green industries.
Egypt’s clean tech strategy targets innovation and job creation
The project was officially kicked off during the first steering committee meeting chaired by Ali Abu Sena, head of the Environmental Affairs Agency.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including UNIDO’s Resident Representative in Egypt, Patrick Gilbert, and Egypt’s National Focal Point for the GCF, Dr. Mahitab El Rammal.
Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad said the program would enhance Egypt’s institutional capacity for climate innovation and industrial development.
“This is a strategic step to bolster Egypt’s regional standing in climate innovation and sustainable industrial development,” she said.
The initiative focuses on improving coordination across government agencies, building capacity in clean tech sectors, and unlocking early-stage climate finance.
These efforts are aimed at supporting Egypt’s broader climate targets under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the 2050 National Climate Strategy.
Boosting green finance and clean tech entrepreneurship in Egypt
Abu Sena highlighted that the initiative would prioritise innovative financing tools, including business acceleration programs and support for preparing bankable green projects in line with GCF requirements.
He also noted that developing the local clean tech ecosystem will create green jobs and empower startups through public-private collaboration.
A significant part of the strategy is to attract private sector participation and equip entrepreneurs with the resources they need to thrive in a sustainable economy.
The initiative is expected to generate demand for climate-smart technologies and promote eco-innovation in sectors such as renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable manufacturing.
The program aims to create a supportive environment for clean tech development and commercialisation in Egypt by connecting startups, investors, and government entities.
Egypt’s climate innovation push gains global backing
The launch of the clean tech initiative aligns Egypt with a growing number of emerging economies investing in climate-smart industries. With support from global partners like UNIDO and GCF, the country is poised to lead the region in its shift to low-carbon development.
This collaboration underscores the importance of inclusive, locally driven solutions in achieving international climate goals. As Egypt continues to expand its green industrial base, the new initiative is a bold step toward a resilient and sustainable future.
