Egypt to produce 100 locally manufactured electric buses

Egyptian Minister of Transport, Kamel al-Wazir, has signed a contract for the acquisition of 100 locally manufactured electric buses.

The vehicles will be produced at the factory of the Egyptian manufacturer Manufacturing Commercial Vehicles (MCV) based in Salheya, Ach-Sharqiya governorate, at a total cost of 680 million Egyptian pounds ($27.6 million).

The project is jointly managed by the Arab Union of Land Transport and Tourism Company (Super Jet) and the Armoured Vehicles Production and Repair Factory under the National Authority for Military Production.

COP27 Agreement 

The Egyptian government signed a similar agreement worth 323 million Egyptian pounds (more than $17 million) for the purchase of 70 electric buses as one of the outcomes of the recently concluded 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt.

The World Bank will provide $1.8 billion in funding for climate resilience through the “Egyptian Sustainable Cities Initiative”. The funds will support 33 projects in the areas of green economy, energy efficiency and green mobility, as well as the development of urban green spaces.

The initiative will be jointly led by Rania El-Mashat, the Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, and her counterpart Hisham Amna, in charge of Local Development, in collaboration with the private sector, civil society organisations (CSOs) and the governorates. It will initially be implemented in Greater Cairo, which is considered the economic and industrial centre of Egypt, with an estimated population of 22 million.

Meanwhile, the construction of the electric car charging stations continues in the capital Cairo. These installations are part of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s (EBRD) Green Cities programme.

Largest and most advanced plant in the Middle East

MCV plant at Salheya is the largest and most advanced plant in the Middle East, which manufactures a full range of buses such as Minibuses, Intercity Buses, High Deck Coaches, Super High Deck Coaches, City Buses, and Double Deck Buses as well as Bus Body Complete Knocked Down Kits “CKD” for assembly in other manufacturing plants under our supervision and technical support.

The company is the General Distributor for Daimler AG, Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles in Egypt and has approximately 6000 employees worldwide, with a production capacity of 10,000 buses and 1500 trucks and superstructure.

The company exports 60% of its annual production to many countries in the African & Middle East countries in addition to some East European countries and Far East countries.

MCV takes pride in its international presence in more than 50 different countries around the globe.

Through this strong global network, the company succeeds in remaining a pioneer in the diverse sectors of manufacturing that decorate its rich portfolio.

MCV is the exclusive agent for Daimler “Mercedes- Benz” Commercial Vehicles in Egypt. MCV’s top notch factory allowed it to be one of the top bus manufacturers in Africa & the Middle East, manufacturing different buses on different chassis and exporting them to over 32 countries in 5 continents.

Egypt’s vision 2030 plan

Egypt is on course to ensure 100 per cent of its national projects meet green criteria by 2030 as the Cop27 host seeks to be a role model for other African countries. 

The country’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad, in an interview said: “Forty per cent of the national budget that funds our national projects is for green projects, and we’re increasing that every year,” 

Through its Vision 2030 plan, Egypt has set a goal of government-funded green projects reaching 50 per cent by 2025 and 100 per cent by 2030.
