Elon Musk’s xAI is gearing up for its new Grok 3, a chatbot that promises to be the “smartest AI on Earth.” Musk said in a post on X that the announcement was made on February 16, 2025, and a live demonstration is scheduled for 8:00p.m. Pacific Time (5:00 a.m. Tuesday W.A.T).

Musk has described Grok 3 as “scary smart,” highlighting its enhanced reasoning capabilities and computational power, which have been significantly boosted compared to its predecessor, Grok 2.

Grok 3’s advanced technology

Grok 3’s development has been accelerated using xAI’s Colossus supercomputer, which was built in just eight months and utilises over 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. This powerful setup provided 200 million GPU hours for training, ten times more than Grok 2 received.

The chatbot incorporates advanced techniques such as synthetic datasets and self-correction mechanisms. Synthetic datasets are artificially generated data compilations that improve learning efficiency while addressing privacy concerns. Meanwhile, self-correction allows Grok 3 to identify and rectify its mistakes autonomously, enhancing accuracy over time.

During a video call at the World Government Summit in Dubai on Thursday, Musk emphasised the model’s ability to outperform existing competitors in the market.

He stated, “Grok 3 has very powerful reasoning capabilities… it’s outperforming anything that’s been released.” This focus on performance comes at a time when other companies, like the Chinese startup DeepSeek, are also making strides in AI technology.

Grok 3’s competitive edge

Grok 3’s launch occurs amid intense competition in the AI chatbot space. Companies are racing to develop more advanced and cost-effective solutions.

Musk’s rivalry with Sam Altman of OpenAI has also been highlighted recently. Musk attempted to acquire OpenAI for $97.4 billion, a bid that was swiftly rejected by Altman. The introduction of Grok 3 is crucial for xAI to establish itself in this rapidly evolving field.

As anticipation builds around Grok 3’s capabilities, many are eager to see how it will perform against established models like ChatGPT and newer entrants like DeepSeek. Grok 3 aims to stand out by allowing users to interact with various characters, from celebrities to superheroes.
