Equinix announced on Monday that it had completed its $320 million acquisition of MainOne, a provider of data center and connectivity services in West Africa. According to Equinix, this is the beginning of the company’s push into Africa.

Equinix say, its attempts to deliver a comprehensive range of technologies and connectivity to Nigeria, Ghana, and Cote d’Ivoire have been boosted by this acquisition.

What This New Development Means For Africa Tech Space

As a result of this transaction, enterprises both inside and outside Africa will have greater access to global and regional markets. With 142 million active internet connections, Nigeria boasts Africa’s largest population and greatest economy. New digital ecosystems in fintech and content and online media have created a huge opportunity for digital service expansion in the city.

MainOne, based in Lagos, Nigeria, is considered by Equinix to be one of Africa’s most intriguing technological companies, and Lagos is quickly emerging as a significant connection hub for the greater West African region.

What Equinix Will Get From MainOne

Platform Equinix will get 64,000 gross square feet of additional space from MainOne’s assets, including four operational data centers and 570,000 square feet of land for future expansions.

More On Equinix Strategic Moves

Equinix has made a string of strategic acquisitions, the most recent of which was the sale of MainOne. It has been stated that Equinix plans to acquire three Entel data centers as part of its South American expansion in December 2021, after the announcement of its aim to acquire MainOne at the end of that year.

Announcing the acquisition of 13 Bell data centers and two highly linked data centers in Mumbai through GPX’s acquisition in October 2020 and September 2021, respectively, both acquisitions followed the announcements.
