Ethio Telecom unveils second EV charging station in Addis Ababa

Ethio Telecom

Ethio Telecom opened its second ultra-fast EV charging station on the Megenagna to Bole route in Addis Ababa on Tuesday, in a daring move to boost Ethiopia’s expanding EV ecosystem.

This new facility aligns with the company’s mission as a leading digital solutions provider and reflects its continued commitment to sustainable development and green infrastructure.

Designed to meet the rising demand for efficient and smart EV charging solutions, the station supports high-speed charging for up to 16 vehicles simultaneously. With the addition of this second location, a total of 32 EVs can now be serviced concurrently along this busy route.

Recall that along the Bole–Megenagna main route, the company previously opened an electric charging station that could serve up to 16 vehicles at a time. Since February 11, 2025, this campaign has prevented an estimated 521,074.23 kg of CO₂ emissions, which is equivalent to growing about 2,622 trees. This has had a substantial environmental impact. This accomplishment was made possible by supplying 14,280 electric vehicles with 376,574.72 kWh of electric energy at that time.

Benefits of the new EV charging station

The new charging station, unveiled on Tuesday, is compatible with EU ultra-fast chargers and supports European-model EVs.

The facility’s spacious layout is thoughtfully designed for smooth entry and exit, it eliminates congestion and ensures convenient service for users.

Depending on the type and vehicle’s capabilities, the chargers’ efficient design allows them to recharge batteries at a rate equal to one kilometre per second.

Based on customer choices and the specific battery requirements of each car, they use artificial intelligence (AI) to optimise power delivery and charging speed. This guarantees quicker, more intelligent, and energy-efficient charging.

Features of the new EV charging station

The newly launched station consists of:

Four Ultra-Fast Chargers (up to 600 kW): Depending on the vehicle’s capacity, the chargers can fully charge compatible vehicles in 15 minutes, allowing drivers to quickly refuel while on the go. Rapid charging, or refuelling, enables city buses that operate public transport services, in particular, to save time and keep operating.

Twelve 500 kW Super-Fast Chargers: These chargers provide high-speed charging with maximum accessibility, enabling drivers to resume driving as soon as possible.

Seamless charging experience with Ethio Telecom’s Telebirr

• Telebirr SuperApp, Ethiopian telecom’s digital payment platform, powers the charging station, which is open around-the-clock.

• Telebirr allows users to pay for charging services in a quick, simple, and convenient manner.

• Telebirr allows drivers to independently charge their cars, guaranteeing a smooth, cashless transaction experience.

• Smart Online Monitoring ensures smooth communication across fibre, 4G, or 5G networks by enabling real-time tracking and effective administration using the Telebirr SuperApp.

• NFC Enable: To provide a quicker and more effective user experience, Near Field Communication (NFC) can be utilised to enable features like “tap to charge” or “smart authentication” for accessing charging stations, starting charging, and completing transactions.

Ethio Telecom’s commitment to Ethiopia’s green economy and sustainable mobility

Ethio telecom remains dedicated to using digital innovation to create intelligent, effective, and future-ready infrastructure as the country speeds up its shift to a green economy and sustainable mobility.

This incredibly quick EV charging station demonstrates Ethio Telecom’s commitment to revolutionising Ethiopia’s transport system with innovative technologies and digital solutions.
