Netflix, Showmax, and Prime Video are Kenya’s primary entertainment subscription services (YouTube Movies is not yet accessible). In this post, we’ll evaluate the plans, pricing, and offerings of these three giants to find the lowest or best alternative if you don’t want to pay for all three. Since streaming is part of our everyday enjoyment, it’s essential to know what each platform offers and how they compare in value.

In 2024, is Showmax worth it? To answer that, we’ll compare it to Prime Video and Netflix on price, content catalogue, and viewing experience.

Price

The Showmax plans include ₦910 for Mobile, ₦2,999 for Standard, ₦3,899 for Pro Mobile, and ₦5,399 for Pro.

Prime Video: Available with a ₦5,999 annual Amazon Prime subscription.

Netflix offers three plans: Basic (₦2,640), Standard (₦4,530), and Premium (₦6,480).

Showmax is cheaper than Netflix but offers more plans with different features. If you currently have Amazon Prime for other benefits, Prime Video is the cheapest alternative.

Content Library

Showmax: Strong focus on African content, including movies, series, and documentaries. It also offers HBO, BBC, and ViacomCBS selected programming.

Prime Video: Growing library, including original programmes like The Boys and The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel, movies, documentaries, and international programming.

Netflix: Boasts a vast library of original series, movies, and documentaries, but African content is limited.

Showmax excels in African programming, whereas Prime Video offers a variety of originals and worldwide entertainment. Netflix has the best original programming but few African ones.

Viewing Experience

Showmax: Multi-device, user-friendly user interface. Offers Supports 5 concurrent streams on Pro.

Prime Video: Simple, device-compatible interface. Three simultaneous feeds.

Netflix: Excellent device compatibility and user interface. The Standard and Premium plans offer 4 concurrent streams.

Showmax and Netflix have comparable user interface and device compatibility. Netflix outperforms with more excellent plan concurrent stream limits.

Verdict:

Whether Showmax is worth it in 2024 depends on your priorities:

For African content lovers: Showmax is a clear winner with its extensive library and HBO content.

For value seekers: If you already have Amazon Prime, bundling with Prime Video makes sense.

For diverse content and originals:  Netflix delivers with its vast library and global appeal.

Your budget, content interests, and viewing habits determine the best option. Before choosing, test free trials or research shows you like.

Is Showmax worthwhile? For its unique African content and reasonable pricing, it should be on your radar. Your streaming kingdom’s champion depends on your viewing habits!

This comparison hopefully helps viewers navigate the streaming jungle and pick the right platform for entertainment.
