Tanzanian startup Ghala obtain funding to enhance businesses with WhatsApp commerce in East Africa.
Ghala, a Tanzanian startup that uses WhatsApp to help small businesses run their operations directly, has raised additional capital to increase digital commerce opportunities for business owners in East Africa.
In advancing its goal of facilitating business management for African entrepreneurs, the company achieved a significant milestone with investment from the Serengeti Business Angels Network (SBAN) and catalytic grant funding from the FUNGUO Innovation Programme.
Ghala’s goal is to enhance business operations via WhatsApp conversation
Initially, Ghala’s goal was straightforward but effective: to enable business owners to manage their whole operation from a single WhatsApp conversation. Millions of Africans rely on this platform daily, so the idea was to use it for everything from product display and order taking to payment processing and delivery tracking.
“For millions of small businesses across Tanzania, Kenya and beyond, WhatsApp is the internet. It’s where business happens, deals close, and trust is built,” said Ghala’s founder and CEO, Kalebu Gwalugano. “We wanted to turn that reality into infrastructure to build the WhatsApp Operating System for African commerce.”
Now, that vision has the backing it needs to develop even more. The most recent funding from Ghala combines private capital and catalytic support, two significant factors influencing Tanzania’s innovation environment.
The first is a contribution from the Serengeti Business Angels Network (SBAN), an association of seasoned financiers committed to helping Tanzanian startups in their early stages. Francis Omorojie, Rodrique Msechu, Curtis Martin, Wende Mhidze, and other angel investors in Ghala have provided more than just monetary assistance. They have coached, assisted in improving Ghala’s business plan, and set up the organisation for future expansion.
Ghala chosen for FUNGUO Innovation Program’s fourth cohort
In addition, 13 Tanzanian startups, including Ghala, have been chosen to join the FUNGUO Innovation Program’s fourth cohort. With assistance from Anza Entrepreneurs, the European Union, the British Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and the Finnish Embassy, UNDP Tanzania is carrying out the project.
The FUNGUO program’s primary goal is to assist high-potential startups in growing their influence by providing capital, mentoring, and governance support.
For Ghala, joining FUNGUO’s network entails more than receiving funding. It’s about accessing contacts and strategic resources to strengthen Tanzania’s innovation base.
“This support isn’t just about funding; it’s about strengthening governance, providing mentorship and building the innovation pipeline Tanzania needs to grow,” said Kalebu.
As Ghala transitions from early traction to regional expansion, the combined support of SBAN and FUNGUO is critical. With the additional funding, Ghala will be able to enter new markets and extend its merchant network throughout more Tanzanian cities.
Additionally, it will strengthen integrations with delivery and payment partners, improving the overall smoothness of the buying and selling process for both merchants and their clients.
Enhancing Ghala’s merchant tools
Enhancing Ghala’s merchant tools will be another major priority. To give business owners more control and insight into their operations, the company intends to add more sophisticated features to WhatsApp, such as analytics and order management.
These upgrades will contribute to Ghala’s reputation as a dependable, expandable hub for small business expansion in East Africa.
Ghala views this milestone as a confirmation of what can occur when local capital and innovation come together, in addition to being a business accomplishment. Growing confidence in Tanzania’s startup ecosystem is demonstrated by the backing of Tanzanian investors and development partners.
It also shows how digital solutions like Ghala can empower informal businesses and promote economic inclusion.
Ghala’s CEO commends stakeholders’ efforts
From the merchants who first believed in the product to the team that put in countless hours behind the scenes, Kalebu quickly acknowledged the contributions of everyone who helped make this success possible.
“None of this would be possible without our merchants who trusted Ghala to power their sales from day one,” he said. “To our team who’ve built every feature, fixed every bug and stayed up late ensuring every message counts, this is your win.”
He also thanked the partners who helped the business along the way.
“To our partners FUNGUO, Anza, UNDP and Serengeti Angels, thank you for walking with us as we turn belief into impact,” he remarked.
Ghala has no intention of slowing down in the future. The business intends to keep growing, and it is currently raising more money to boost expansion, improve infrastructure, and connect with more informal enterprises in Tanzania and East Africa.
“If you’re an investor, fintech or ecosystem partner who believes in the future of WhatsApp commerce and AI-powered retail for Africa,” Kalebu said, “let’s build together.”
