His Majesty Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Okyenhene King of Akyem Abuakwa, Ghana, visited Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to commemorate a ten-year collaboration between WPI and the Akyem Abuakwa region.

This partnership has focused on various projects addressing environmental and social challenges in the region, including renewable energy, clean water access, and sustainable agriculture. Global Unity for Global Challenges

The Okyenhene brought a message of global unity and cooperation during his visit, underscoring the interconnectedness of humanity and the lessons learned from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. His message emphasized the significance of collaboration in addressing critical issues such as climate change, poverty, and social inequality.

Impactful Projects

WPI’s Ghana Project Center, founded in 2020 in the villages of Kyebi and Dwenase, is one of more than 50 project centers worldwide where WPI students co-design solutions to regional challenges. The projects undertaken in Ghana have not only benefited the local communities but have also provided valuable learning opportunities for WPI students and researchers. Some of the projects included developing a health center assessment, organizing a community infrastructure project, establishing a STEM curriculum for rural Ghana, and co-creating gold mining safety technology.

The Okyenhene’s visit resonated with WPI’s mission to make a meaningful impact on the world through science, technology, and social progress. I hope after COVID we can continue to come together and say, ‘never again’.”

He urged individuals and institutions to take action, saying, “We have to step up, we have to speak up; our voice may be lonely, but speak anyway.”
