The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), the government agency that promotes ICT, facilitates capacity building, and implements universal access to electronic communication is set to upgrade Ghana’s rural telecom sites to 4G.

Prince Ofosu Sefah, the Minister of GIFEC, recently announced that the goal of the rural telephony program is to upgrade all existing rural telephone facilities to 4G, and that the agency hopes to make that possible.

After the commissioning of the Adiemra rural telephony site in Bono Region by Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister for Communications and Digitalization during her visit to the region for the Girls in ICT Program, Minister Ofosu said Ghana is ready to be at the forefront of digitalization.

Ghana’s Rural Telephony Upgrade Benefits

It is well known that telecommunications service upgrades have a significant impact on both businesses and communication sectors.

Price ofosu said the move will ensure rural residents have access to high-quality voice and data services, allowing them to enjoy the benefits of Ghana’s digital agenda.

“As the minister was alluding to, although we want to complete the 2016 sites before the end of next year, GIFEC also has other exciting stuff coming up. We shall be rolling out more to have full coverage of the entire country.”

GIFEC Observations

There are currently 758 sites with 3G connectivity, according to GIFEC’s Director, which supports the government’s “Digital for Inclusion” program.

The telecom operators in Ghana are working together on a project that aims to alleviate some of the country’s connectivity issues.

“We are hoping that in the second phase of the Rural Telephony project which we’re certain will materialize, all our sites will be upgraded from the current status of 3G to 4G. This means we can enhance the quality of service” added Prince Ofosu
