Users can now edit Google Drive films directly in Workspace using a new shortcut button for Google Vids, its AI-powered video editing tool.
An “Open” button appears at the top right of Google Drive video previews. This opens Vids immediately, allowing easy cutting, music, and text adjustments.
This shortcut speeds up editing without leaving Drive by default.
Fast editing directly from Google Drive
There is no longer a need to acquire or manually upload files to edit videos. Google’s new Vids shortcut streamlines the editing process by seamlessly incorporating video adjustments into the Drive interface.
Google says, “The new feature allows Workspace users to initiate a video edit using the Vids app directly from the Google Drive interface.”
Users previewing their videos in seconds can begin editing by selecting a single option, saving valuable time for content creators and professionals.
This integration considerably improves Google’s aspiration to establish a fluid workspace.
AI-powered Video tools at your fingertips
Google Vids, launched in 2024, streamlines video creation and editing with AI.
Vids can automatically write videos, make videos from text prompts, rearrange clips with smooth transitions, and trim and apply overlays.
Google’s dedication to AI in everyday tools is reflected in this release. Google’s Workspace Updates blog notes, “Once Vids opens the video file, a new file is created, enabling further edits like music and text addition.”
The reliance on AI makes simple video editing accessible without needing specialised software.
Availability and limitations
This new Vids shortcut function began on August 21, 2025, and will roll out to all Workspace users in the following weeks.
The shortcut is usually active, but administrators can turn it off. Videos must be under 35 minutes and 4GB for suitable supported formats: MP4, OGG, WebM, and MOV.
Android Police reports, “Users should soon start seeing a purple Google Vids icon in the top-right corner when previewing a video file,” making editing easier.
Google’s most recent update is a component of a more extensive initiative to improve Drive’s video capabilities.
This initiative was launched in response to introducing AI-powered video summaries earlier this year.
Video editing is now more intelligent, dependable, and efficient than ever for workspace users, all within their current Drive workflow.
