Google revealed a new Chrome feature on Tuesday that would automatically change hacked or weak passwords to increase security for its 3 billion users globally. Chrome’s integrated Password Manager was updated during the Google I/O 2025 developer conference.

Chrome previously warned people about risky passwords but required manual change. The new feature updates passwords automatically with user agreement.

How Google Chrome will automatically replace weak passwords

When you log in to a website, Chrome will determine whether your password has been compromised in a data breach, reused, or is weak. When Chrome detects a vulnerable password, it will provide you with an immediate option to rectify the situation.

Chrome can establish and update a secure new password on compatible websites without cumbersome settings. This simple technique makes password changes safer and easier for users.

Google’s Vice President of Chrome, Parisa Tabriz, explained that this feature balances convenience and security: “If the password change process is too complicated, users will simply ignore it. Automatic change is a win for both security and user experience”.

Chrome will never change a user’s password without first gaining explicit consent. This is done to guarantee that users continue to keep control over their accounts.

Rollout and website support for automatic password updates

Once the automated password replacement feature is released, which is anticipated to occur in the latter half of 2025, a limited number of websites will initially be accessible to users.

Website operators must implement particular code, such as setting a well-known URL for password updates, to allow this capability.

Google encourages developers to prepare their sites to support the feature, which will expand over time as adoption grows.

This update builds on previous improvements to Chrome Password Manager, including strong password generation during sign-ups and dark web breach alerts.

Google’s goal is to reduce the risks associated with stolen credentials, which occur worldwide and affect billions of individuals. This will be accomplished by automatically changing passwords. With the proliferation of cyber threats, Google has developed this tool as part of a bigger mission to make the internet safer.

With this update, Google Chrome is taking a bold step to simplify password security, making it simpler than ever to protect online accounts from hackers and data breaches.
