Google search’s new topic filters make it easier to refine results or expand searches, as Google revealed today that it is making it simpler for users to explore related topics and drill down on a search.

There are already a number of filters in search that can help you separate your results into videos, news, photos, and shopping results. Along with the filters it already has, the big search engine will now show users a list of related topics at the top of the page with search results.

Today’s announcement comes a day after Google expanded a feature it has long provided on mobile to include a “continuous scrolling” experience on the desktop so users don’t have to hop between pages to obtain relevant search results.

Google states that when users tap on the themes, they will change to offer new options. “When you conduct a search, our systems automatically display relevant topics for you based on what we understand about how people search and from analyzing content across the web.”  Topics and filters are shown in the order our systems automatically determine to be most helpful for your query. If you don’t see a particular filter you want, you can find more using the “All filters” option, which is available at the end of the report.

How Google Search’s New Filter Works

Here is a brief explanation of how these improvements work. In short, Google places these filters and a scrollable list of related topics at the top of the search results page. The list should include relevant topics to the question to help you narrow down your search.

The topic refinements that you can apply to your question are shown by a plus sign (+).gf

Google Advanced Search

With Google’s advanced search, you can sift through the Internet’s clutter—and there is no shortage of it—to find only the search results you need.

Google’s advanced search features are useful for all types of web users, but they’re especially helpful for e-commerce business owners because they make it simpler to spot opportunities, research rivals, and comprehend how Google (and Google users) see your store.

With Advanced Search, you may focus results on complicated searches. For instance, you can find clip art in black and white or websites in German that have been updated within the last 24 hours.

Enter a search term and select the gear icon on the right side of the results page to access Advanced Search. You might want to save the Google Advanced Search URL to your bookmarks if you intend to use it frequently.
