Google released an experimental desktop app for Windows that emulates the Spotlight search function that Mac users are accustomed to. With this new tool, Windows users may rapidly locate files, programs, and online results without interrupting their current process.

The application launches a modern, pill-shaped search bar on the desktop for quick searches when the Alt + Space shortcut is used.

Spotlight-like search for faster results

Google’s new Windows program provides a Spotlight-like experience, making searching installed apps, local files, and web material easier. Results from the user’s PC, Google Drive, and the internet are retrieved via the search bar and arranged in categories such as “Apps and websites” and “Local files.”

According to Google, this strategy reduces disruptions by allowing users to locate what they need in a single interface, mirroring the seamlessness Mac users have long enjoyed with Spotlight.

Lens and AI features enhance search

One of the standout features is the integration of Google Lens, which lets users capture text or images from their screen for quick translation, copying, or research. This makes the app more versatile than traditional Windows search tools.

A conversational, context-rich response to intricate questions is also provided via the app’s AI Mode. Users can customise their searches to meet specific demands by switching between modes like All Results, AI Mode, Images, Shopping, and Videos. The application also lets you customise the shortcut key and supports dark mode.

Availability and system requirements

Currently, the app is available to US English users through Google’s Search Labs experimental program, targeting Windows 10 PCs and higher. Since it is an early-stage release, Google seeks user feedback to refine the experience before the wider rollout.

The company’s move reflects a growing trend to blend local and AI-powered search directly on desktop platforms, promising a more integrated and efficient user interface.

This Windows desktop app from Google redefines search convenience by combining local file access, AI capabilities, and Lens integration in one tool. It is positioned to boost productivity and streamline users’ navigation of their digital environment.
