Customers of one of Nigeria’s biggest commercial banks, Guaranty Trust Bank (GT Bank), were worried when the bank said it would stop supporting its current banking app after an update.

All of the bank’s customers were told this by mail. The email said that the new and improved version of the GTWorld mobile app would be put on the Play Store and App Store.

A part of the email says, “On July 12 (Wednesday), we’ll put the new and improved version of the GTWorld Mobile Banking App on the Play Store and the App Store… Please note that we will stop supporting the current version of the GTWorld App on August 12.”

The bank would stop offering the old GTWorld app in a month, just three months after it stopped offering the GT Bank app for it. This is the second time GT Bank has shut down its app because users complained that it had bugs and other problems that sometimes made it impossible to move or withdraw money.

The first time was in May, when the bank told its users that they wouldn’t be able to use the GTBank Mobile App to get to the bank’s online services after May 1, 2023.

Customers of GT Bank are now upset and surprised that they can’t use their banking app to finish transactions. Several of the replies said that many people were surprised that the bank didn’t have the update ready yet, even though it was already talking about stopping the services.

A Twitter user said, “GTB is sending messages that it will stop supporting the old app tomorrow, but it hasn’t put out the changes. What do they think will happen when people move this way? I hope the best for them.’

Another customer wrote, “It looks like none of us will be able to get in until GT World is done lifting and updating their app… How about updating apps at midnight when there’s less traffic and the damage is easier to handle?

What we know about GT Bank

On May 1, 2023, GT Bank instructed its users to completely switch to the GT World app after shutting down its original app, the GTBank Mobile App. At that time, the choice might have had something to do with the many customer complaints about the app’s performance on social media.

In May 2017, the bank put out GTWorld, which was Nigeria’s first fully biometric mobile banking app that could handle digital transfers. The app was made so that customers could easily and quickly do everything that was important to them.

But customers’ complaints on social media, especially Twitter, show that the bank is getting a lot of flak from them. They complain every day about failed transactions, transfers, and even logging in.

The new update has yet to appear on the Play Store or the App Store, so it’s unclear whether this will be a happy development for the company’s customers, who believe it will put an end to the delivery of subpar services, or a nightmare if they find themselves unable to complete their transactions in the near future.
