A confirmed attempt has been made to breach the domain of Guarantee Trust Bank Plc’s website.

Just a day after the bank renewed its domain name, a hacking attempt occurred on Wednesday, resulting in a brief outage to the website and preventing users from accessing online services.

This caused a great deal of anxiety and media stories claiming that the bank’s website had been cloned, thereby endangering the privacy of its customers.

Hack attempt was unsuccessful

A statement provided to the media on Thursday and signed by the bank’s management claimed that its website was not cloned and that the incident was a failure.

Emphasising that the bank does not retain consumer information on its website also allayed worries about customer data being compromised.

“Our attention has been drawn to reports in the media alleging that hackers have seized the bank’s website, cloned it, and intercepted customer data,” the statement headlined “Alleged Web Domain Hack: GTBank Provides Clarity” said.

“We would like to reassure all of our customers and stakeholders that the bank’s website has not been cloned, and that we do not store customer information on our website, and as such, there has been no instance of compromise of customer data, even though there was an isolated incident of an attempt to compromise our website domain.”

GTBank’s website is now working

According to the statement, the bank’s information security specialists are continuously restoring domain settings.

Additionally, GTBank stressed its steadfast dedication to protecting consumer information and urged clients to maintain composure and faith in the bank’s robust security protocols.

“Our customers should be sure that our website will be up soon as our team of information security experts is working nonstop to restore domain settings.

“We kindly request that all of our clients ignore the assertions made in these press articles, and we reassure you of our steadfast dedication to protecting client information. We appreciate your ongoing support,” the statement stated.

Further investigation by our reporter revealed that the website is currently operational.
