Instagram’s new Map feature is stirring privacy concerns by showing users’ locations on an interactive map. Though Instagram says the feature is off by default, many users worry it might reveal their address without explicit consent.
Here’s how to ensure your location stays private on Instagram’s new Map.
Understand Instagram map location sharing settings
Instagram Map lets you share your recent active location with select people, not everyone.
The feature combines two types of places you tag in stories or posts and your “last active location” in the app.
This last active location updates when you open Instagram, but only people you follow back or a custom-approved list can see it.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri reassured users that the feature requires double consent, meaning you must explicitly agree twice before sharing your location.
Many users mistakenly think their location is shared automatically, but Instagram Map is off by default.
You can see a map on your direct messages page, but that doesn’t mean others see your spot unless you have opted in.
The confusion mainly arises because Instagram pulls tagged locations from your content (like stories or reels), which appear on the map by design, even with location sharing off. This is not new, but it is more visible now.
How to turn off location sharing on Instagram map
If you want to stop Instagram from exposing your address, follow these straightforward steps:
• Open Instagram and go to your direct messages (DMs).
• Tap the circular map icon in the top right to open Instagram Map.
• Find and tap the gear icon (settings) on the Map screen.
• Select “Who can see your location,” and set it to No one.
Alternatively, you can adjust settings by following these steps:
• Go to your Instagram profile.
• Tap the menu or settings icon in the top right.
• Go to Story, Live, and Location.
• Select Location Sharing (Instagram Map).
• Choose No one and save changes.
Once you turn off location sharing, no one can see your active location on the map.
However, note that if you tag a location in your posts or stories, those places can still appear publicly on the map for up to 24 hours. So be mindful about tagging locations to keep your whereabouts private.
Instagram Map makes location sharing visible and straightforward, but you are in control.
Your address won’t be exposed unless you explicitly allow it, and turning off location sharing is just a few taps away.
Stay vigilant about the privacy settings in this evolving app feature to keep your address private on Instagram.
