Kacha Digital Financial Services, Ethiopia’s first registered commercial payment instrument issuer, has officially launched a new digital fuel payment service in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and Logistics.

This service allows drivers to easily pay for fuel using Kacha’s mobile platform anywhere in Ethiopia. Kacha follows Dashen Bank, Oromia Bank, and Safaricom-owned M-Pesa, which have previously introduced similar services.

Kacha is the latest financial institution to launch this initiative, following Dashen Bank, Oromia Bank, and Safaricom-owned M-Pesa, which have previously introduced the same.

How to pay for fuel using Kacha’s mobile platform

Customers can purchase fuel through Kacha’s mobile app, via a “Push USSD Notification,” or by scanning a QR code. If drivers are not already Kacha users, they can simply download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. After registering, consumers can transfer money to their Kacha wallet from any bank and begin paying for fuel immediately.

“Today’s launch is a key milestone in our journey to deliver inclusive and comprehensive digital financial services to our society,” said Mr. Abraham Tilahun, CEO of Kacha Digital Financial Services.

“Moving forward, we will expand our offerings to reduce the financial burden on transport operators by introducing additional services tailored to their needs.” he added.

Selman Mohammed, project manager of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics’ National Fuel Subsidy Project Office, remarked: “Kacha Digital Financial Services has integrated with the National Fuel Aggregator Application system, developed to digitalise the country’s fuel distribution service. This integration brings an additional digital payment option to the public and demonstrates Kacha’s capacity to deliver a broad range of digital financial services.”

Services offered by Kacha

Kacha has aggressively pursued digital finance in the transportation sector, targeting a variety of investors, including ride-hailing services, three-wheeler (bajaj) operators, and providers of digital insurance and premium financing.

With this new fuel payment service, Kacha aims to enhance accessibility by providing financing alternatives and enabling digital fuel purchases at petrol stations nationwide.

Kacha offers a variety of digital financial services to promote financial inclusion, all in full compliance with the rules set by the National Bank of Ethiopia. The company collaborates with banks, insurance companies, microfinance institutions, savings and credit cooperatives, and international remittance providers to deliver integrated, customer-focused financial services.

Driver-centric solutions offered by Kacha Digital Financial Services

Drivers in Ethiopia’s rapidly evolving mobility landscape, particularly those employed in the metre taxi and ride-hailing industries, deal with everyday financial difficulties ranging from handling operating expenses to essential auto maintenance.

Kacha Digital Financial Service has come to fill this gap by offering customised financial products that offer genuine assistance when it’s needed.

In addition to being a digital wallet, Kacha is turning into a lifeline for drivers negotiating the highways and the reality of an expanding, technologically advanced economy.

On Saturday, Kacha Digital Financial Services unveiled other services which are tailored to the needs of Ethiopian drivers. The services include the following:

Premium Insurance Loan

In Ethiopia, drivers must have insurance for both legal and economic reasons, but the initial premiums can be very expensive.

With the launch of the Premium Insurance Loan service, drivers can now buy auto insurance straight from the Kacha app. It is acceptable for a motorist to not have the entire premium amount on hand.

Instant financing alternatives are offered by Kacha, allowing users to borrow the necessary amount and repay it gradually.  Without jeopardising individual financial stability, this service guarantees adherence, security, and tranquillity.

Ride-Hailing Loan

With the Ride-Hailing Loan, Kacha provides metre taxi and ride-hailing drivers with easy access to microloans, especially for urgent auto repairs, replacement of spare parts, or other operational difficulties.

This solution, accessible through a mobile device at any time and from any location, eliminates the financial strain associated with maintaining cars and making money. It combines support, speed, and ease of use.

Kacha: Providing services beyond finance

With these developments, Kacha is creating a driver-first digital economy and offering financial goods.

Kacha is helping thousands of Ethiopian drivers stay on the road, manage their money more wisely, and access opportunities they previously couldn’t by providing them with workable, approachable answers to real-world problems.

With the growth of digital banking, Kacha’s dedication to innovation and inclusivity demonstrates that everyone can advance with technology.
