EMYDAWA, the Kenyan health-tech firm renowned for its e-pharmacy platform, has secured a US $20 million capital round from private equity investor Alta Semper Capital.

MYDAWA was founded in 2016 with the goal of providing residents of the region with a simple, cost-effective way to get access to high-quality medical supplies and services. All services, from customer support to logistics, are managed and provided by the firm internally to guarantee the best possible standard of service.

MYDAWA has developed over the years into a fully regulated healthcare one-stop shop, providing customers with access to consultations, testing, referrals, and a help desk through any channel they wish.

This new funding represents Alta Semper’s official launch into the digital healthcare market in Africa. According to Afsane Jetha, CEO and Managing Partner of Alta Semper Capital,  the firm is interested in prominent companies in politically secure, rapidly developing, and highly diverse countries. ”MYDAWA was the natural option for us since their revolutionary technology, supporting a scalable business model, as well as regulatory know-how and market entrance expertise, fitted so perfectly to our own strategy.

MYDAWA opens 19 additional outlets in Kampala and surrounding areas

One of our primary goals is to “democratise access to health and wellbeing across the African continent,” and a key part of that is “increasing access to good advice and safe and affordable medication,”  Afsane added.

“With Africa’s consumer spending expected to reach $2.1 trillion by 2025, this represents one of the continent’s most significant business opportunities.” As a result, the investment in MYDAWA is part of our strategic goal of satisfying this expanding demand by investing in locally manufactured and value-priced consumer products and services,” she said.

Concurrently, MYDAWA announced that it had acquired Guardian Health in Uganda for an undisclosed sum. The pharmaceutical firm has opened roughly 19 additional outlets in strategic areas of Kampala and the surrounding areas. The company sees the move as the beginning of a worldwide expansion into Africa, where it hopes to make acquisitions, form partnerships, and find other promising enterprises.

Priscilla Muhiu will be heading up operations in Kenya for MYDAWA. Since September of 2020, Priscilla served as the General Manager of Glovo Kenya.
