Dr Omollo stated that the directive seeks to foster responsible use of social media platforms and enhance cybersecurity measures to combat the misuse of technology. “The move will help curb harassment, hate speech, and incitement to violence while fostering a safer digital space for users in Kenya,” the Ministry stated in their announcement.

The Ministry also highlighted the need for closer collaboration between the government and social media companies to ensure compliance with local laws and regulations. The directive underscores the government’s broader strategy to create a secure and regulated digital environment that supports free expression without compromising national security.

Social media companies required to establish offices in Kenya

Social media operators must now establish offices in Kenya to provide direct access for addressing concerns related to their platforms. This requirement will streamline accountability and ensure timely responses to issues affecting Kenyan users.

The Ministry noted that the physical presence of these companies would facilitate improved cooperation with law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies. This initiative aligns with Kenya’s efforts to strengthen its regulatory framework for digital platforms, fostering a balance between technological advancement and public safety.

The Ministry of Interior reiterated its commitment to engaging stakeholders in implementing the directive effectively, ensuring that the new regulations promote responsible technology use without stifling innovation or freedom of expression.
