Lagos has thrown its full weight behind a €410 million project to revolutionise its water transport system. This initiative, known as the Omi Eko Project, is designed to convert the city’s inland waterways into an eco-friendly and efficient transport network.
The Lagos State Government and international partners are poised to reshape urban mobility and ease severe road congestion by switching to water travel.
€410M Investment drives Lagos waterway transformation
The Omi Eko Project is backed by a €360 million investment from the European Union, French Development Agency, and European Investment Bank, topped up with a €40 million contribution from Lagos State and €10 million from private investors.
The construction and upgrade of 140 kilometres of ferry routes, which include 25 modern terminals equipped with electric charging stations for hybrid vessels, will be stimulated by this substantial funding.
“The project is a visionary initiative aimed at transforming Lagos’ inland waterways into a world-class transportation network,” said Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, General Manager of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).
“This project is not just about improving water transport—it’s about redefining the way Lagos moves,” Emmanuel added ahead of the official launch held at the Five Cowries Terminal in October 2025. By connecting ferry services with current rail and road networks, the project will improve connectivity and launch 70 hybrid electric ships with an annual passenger volume of 25 million.
Eco-Friendly transport to ease Lagos traffic
The Omi Eko Project intends to reduce Lagos’s infamous traffic jams by offering a dependable and environmentally friendly substitute. The waterways infrastructure will have strong drainage systems to avoid floods at terminals and floating pontoons to adjust to rising sea levels.
These designs reflect comprehensive climate resilience planning. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called the launch a “bold statement” about Lagos leading sustainable transport innovation in Africa.
Lagos’ smart water transport strategy reduces traffic congestion and carbon emissions and provides new economic prospects. Thanks to the Omi Eko Project, Lagos is becoming smarter, cleaner, and more connected.
