Malawi’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services has formally launched e-passports with encrypted chips embedded with other enhanced security features, per International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.

The new e-passports will make Malawian citizens’ travel documents more authentic and secure.

Permanent digital application platform

Authorities have also introduced a permanent digital application platform that streamlines the passport application process to support the introduction of the new passports.

Created in collaboration with Madras Security Printers, the system allows candidates to apply online, pay with bank deposits or mobile money services, and pick up their passports from nationwide locations.

According to department spokesperson Pasqually Zulu, Malawian embassies and consulates worldwide will receive samples of the new e-passports to streamline the application process for foreign visitors.

“People will just register at immigration, pay through banks or mobile money and apply online. This will save people from spending much money and time travelling long distances to central offices. We have conducted thorough security checks to protect the system from cyber threats,” Zulu told the Malawi News Agency (Mana).

Ransomware attack on Malawi’s passport system

Last year, a ransomware attack on the nation’s passport system delayed the application and issuance process.

The new system is also anticipated to reduce traffic at immigration offices because applicants will no longer have to wait in line to apply for passports.

Zulu added that the updated platform has several additional features, including online appointment scheduling and SMS alerts to notify applicants when their passports are ready.

Somalia modernises travel with new e-visa platform

Similarly, Somalia commences the issuance of a new e-visa platform on September 1, which is set to revolutionise travel to the country.

This digital system replaces the traditional paper-based visa application process, enabling foreign visitors to apply online from anywhere in the world.

The government guarantees the platform will improve border security and transparency and simplify travel.

The platform is operated by the Somali Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA), which represents a significant advancement in Somalia’s compliance with international electronic visa standards.

The new electronic travel authorisation system (eTAS) and e-visa provide a unified, user-friendly portal for visa applications. Travellers can establish accounts, upload documents, and pay visa fees online, reducing wait times and eliminating the need for lengthy embassy visits.

According to ICA Director-General Mustafa Duhulow, “Somalia joins the world in adopting digital visa solutions. This platform will simplify travel, safeguard data, and strengthen the economy.”

The system supports growing visitor flows from trade, aid work, and the Somali diaspora’s family visits, making visa issuance faster and more reliable.

This e-visa platform mandates electronic vetting for most foreign nationals entering Somalia to improve security.
