Meta has launched a new AI feature called “Message Summaries” on WhatsApp. This feature, announced on Wednesday, is designed to help users quickly catch up on unread messages in both individual and group chats.

It uses Meta AI to generate concise bullet-point summaries of missed conversations, saving users time and effort scrolling through long chat threads.

How Meta AI summarises WhatsApp messages privately

The Message Summaries feature operates using Meta’s Private Processing technology, which ensures that message content and summaries remain private and inaccessible to Meta or WhatsApp servers.

Summaries are generated locally on the user’s device or within a secure cloud environment called the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), preventing external access or tampering. WhatsApp emphasises that no other chat participants can see when a user has requested a summary, preserving privacy within group chats.

Users must manually enable this optional feature via Settings > Chats > Private Processing. Once activated, a small icon appears on eligible chats, allowing users to tap “Summarise Privately” to receive a summary that is visible only to them. Advanced Chat Privacy settings also allow users to control which chats can be summarised by AI, giving complete control over data sharing.

Current availability and expansion plans

As of June 26, 2025, message summaries are being distributed to WhatsApp users in the United States with support for the English language. Meta plans to expand the feature to more languages and countries later this year as part of its broader AI integration strategy across its platforms.

The company highlights that this rollout builds on earlier AI tools introduced in WhatsApp, such as asking Meta AI questions within chats and generating images in real time.

This new feature aims to make managing busy chats easier without compromising WhatsApp conversations’ encrypted, private nature. Meta states, “Message Summaries uses Private Processing technology, which allows Meta AI to generate a response without Meta or WhatsApp ever seeing your messages or the private summaries”. This approach aligns with growing user concerns about privacy and data security in AI-powered messaging tools.
