Meta expands Marketplace with eBay integration in major test across three countries

Meta announced on Wednesday that it will launch a new test allowing users to browse eBay listings on Facebook Marketplace and complete purchases directly on eBay. The test will be available in Germany, France, and the U.S. as part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to expand its Marketplace platform.

In November, Meta was fined $840 million by the European Commission for engaging in anti-competitive behaviour pertaining to Facebook Marketplace.

The Commission accused Meta of leveraging its market dominance to favour its own services over competitors. While Meta acknowledges the issue and is working on a resolution, it is also appealing the fine.

Benefits for Facebook and eBay users

Facebook Marketplace customers would have access to a bigger range of listings from the eBay community, while eBay merchants would gain more visibility to Facebook’s enormous audience, according to a statement from Meta.

Meta’s most recent announcement was not immediately met with a response from the European Commission.

Users’ purchasing habits may change as a result of the two internet titans’ partnership, which represents a significant change in the e-commerce scene.
