Meta on Friday said it is testing a new AI chatbot service that uses Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger to send consumers follow-up messages.
This innovation aims to keep users engaged by having chatbots initiate conversations based on previous interactions.
How Meta’s AI chatbots initiate conversations
Unlike traditional chatbots that respond only when prompted, Meta’s new AI bots can send unsolicited messages to users, but only under specific conditions.
The chatbot will reach out if a user has messaged it at least five times within 14 days. After that, the bot may send a follow-up message to continue the conversation, but it will stop if the user does not respond to this initial outreach.
For example, a chatbot persona called “The Maestro of Movie Magic” might message users with lines like, “I hope you’re having a harmonious day! I wanted to check in and see if you’ve discovered any new favourite soundtracks or composers recently. Or perhaps you’d like some recommendations for your next movie night?” This shows how the AI aims to feel like a personalised companion rather than just a tool.
Customisation and user control over AI bots
Meta is collaborating with the data labelling firm Alignerr to train these customizable chatbots. Users can create bots through Meta’s AI Studio platform, tailoring personalities and topics.
These bots can remember past conversations to make follow-ups more relevant and engaging.
Users also have control over their bots’ visibility. They can keep them private or share them publicly via stories, direct links, or even display them on Facebook or Instagram profiles.
Meta assures that the AI will not spam users and will cease messaging if the initial follow-up is ignored, ensuring user comfort and privacy.
A Meta spokesperson explained, “This allows you to continue exploring topics of interest and engage in more meaningful conversations with the AIs across our apps”.
This new feature marks a shift in how AI chatbots interact on social media, moving from reactive to proactive engagement while offering users customisation and control over their digital companions.
