Microsoft has introduced a new AI-powered feature to the Windows 11 Photos app that organises your photo library into meaningful categories.
This update for Windows 11 Insiders on Copilot+ PCs organises photographs into categories like screenshots, receipts, identity documents, and handwritten notes to save time and clutter. The AI can even recognise document types regardless of the language in the image, making it versatile for users worldwide.
AI-powered sorting into predefined categories
The new Auto-Categorisation feature in the Photos app intelligently scans visual content and groups images accordingly. For example, a screenshot is automatically moved to a “Screenshots” folder, while a scanned passport photo, regardless of whether the text is in English or Hungarian, is filed under “Identity documents.”
The Categories area of the Photos app’s navigation bar displays automatically sorted images for quick access. Microsoft verifies that this sorting data is processed on-device, preserving privacy and efficiency.
Enhanced photo library navigation and customisation
Finding specific photos is now easier thanks to the AI-organised structure, accessible through the search bar or the left navigation panel. Users can manually change categories or provide feedback to improve AI accuracy if any photo is incorrectly categorised.
Currently, the categories include screenshots, receipts, identity documents, and notes, with Microsoft hinting at potential customisation options in future updates, such as allowing folders like “vacations” or “pets.” Along with organisation features, Snapdragon, AMD, and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs now include Super Resolution upgrades for photo clarity.
Microsoft’s Senior Product Manager, Ronnie Myers, shared, “Auto-Categorisation automatically detects and organises your photo collection into meaningful categories using AI. It’s designed to save time, reduce clutter, and make your photo library easier to navigate”.
This update marks a strong step towards integrating AI tools deeply into everyday digital tasks, helping users manage their growing image libraries with less effort.
Microsoft’s growing array of intelligent features on Copilot+ PCs using Microsoft Photos version 2025.11090.25001.0 or above, available in the Microsoft Store for Windows Insiders, includes the AI upgrade.
