Microsoft announced Dragon Copilot, an AI-powered assistant, on Monday to streamline clinical operations and decrease healthcare administrative responsibilities.

The system integrates the capabilities of Dragon Medical One (DMO) and DAX Copilot, both developed by Nuance, a company Microsoft acquired in 2021.

Dragon Copilot combines these technologies to provide sophisticated ambient listening and natural language dictation, backed by healthcare-specific security measures and refined generative AI.

Dragon Copilot automates key tasks such as creating clinical documentation, performing medical information searches, and generating referral letters and after-visit summaries. It also supports multilingual ambient note creation, allowing clinicians to capture patient interactions seamlessly.

According to Joe Petro, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Health and Life Sciences Solutions, “At Microsoft, we have long believed that AI has the incredible potential to free clinicians from much of the administrative burden in healthcare and enable them to refocus on taking care of patients.”

Enhancing clinician well-being and patient care

Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare includes an AI assistant that interfaces with Epic and other electronic health records (EHRs). This keeps the data environment safe while enabling clinicians to work effectively within a single system.

Dragon Copilot frees professionals to care for patients by automating tedious chores. It can create speciality-specific clinical notes or real-time after-visit summaries from talks.

The impact of this technology is already evident. Surveys reveal that 70 percent of clinicians using Nuance technologies report reduced feelings of burnout, while 93 per cent of patients say their overall experience improved.

“With Dragon Copilot, we’re not just enhancing how we work in the EHR — we’re tapping into a Microsoft-powered ecosystem where AI assistance extends across our organisation,” said Dr. R. Hal Baker, Senior Vice President at WellSpan Health.

Dragon Copilot will launch in the U.S. and Canada in May 2025, with plans for global expansion. This tool represents a significant step forward in improving clinician efficiency and patient satisfaction through AI-driven solutions.
