Two of Nigeria’s leading fintech firms, Moniepoint and Flutterwave, have been named to the 2025 TIME100 Most Influential Companies list, unveiled Thursday, underscoring their impact on digital finance across Africa and beyond.

Categorised as a Leader and Titan respectively, the two firms represent the continent’s growing influence in global innovation and the digital economy.

Their stories pulsate with ambition, tenacity, and impact, and their inclusion on this esteemed list underscores Nigeria’s growing importance in global innovation.

Leader Moniepoint’s significant milestone

Founded in 2015 by Tosin Eniolorunda and Felix Ike, Moniepoint was initially a backend payments provider for banks before transforming into a full-service commercial banking platform.

Recognised as a Leader on the TIME100 list, the company played a crucial role during Nigeria’s 2023 cash crisis by ensuring continuity for small and medium-sized businesses. It now processes over 800 million transactions monthly, valued at more than $17 billion, giving businesses access to facilities for loan processing, expenditure management, and payments.

Supported by investors such as Google, Moniepoint achieved unicorn status in 2024 with a $110 million fundraising round, which is uncommon for African firms.

The TIME100 award, according to Eniolorunda, is a “validation of creating financial happiness” for clients.

“This recognition by TIME is a powerful validation of the work we do every day to create financial happiness for millions of people and businesses in Africa,” said Tosin Eniolorunda, CEO and Co-Founder of Moniepoint, according to Condia.

“From enabling over 10 million businesses to accept payments, access working capital, and run their operations digitally, to supporting everyday Africans through innovative financial solutions — we are proud of the role we play in powering dreams while transforming lives and livelihoods.”

Moniepoint’s services

In addition to payments, Moniepoint provides insurance and credit access, tackling practical issues for business owners and retailers.

Its platform streamlines processes, enabling a vendor to easily obtain a loan or a small shopkeeper to keep track of expenses.

The company’s success is evident in its ability to change quickly and respond to people.

Moniepoint’s leadership is evident in its goal of democratising financial services, which will affect the entire Nigerian economy by promoting opportunity and stability.

At the IBS Intelligence (IBSi) Digital Banking Awards 2025, Moniepoint was recognised as a winner in two distinguished categories: Corporate Banking and Digital Wallets.

Titan Flutterwave’s significant milestone

Known as a Titan, Flutterwave is the backbone of Africa’s payments ecosystem, with unparalleled ambition and scope. Through Flutterwave, African companies can access the worldwide market.

It facilitates easy cross-border payments by processing billions of transactions in 17 countries.

Customers from South Africa can now shop in Senegal using a Kenyan digital wallet, removing obstacles to African trade that previously existed.

Flutterwave handled $7.5 billion in transactions and assisted 20,000 small companies in moving online during the 2020 lockdowns.

Its importance is demonstrated by its $15.7 million fundraising round and alliances with well-known international companies like Uber.

Olugbenga Agboola, Flutterwave’s Founder & CEO, stated, “We’re honored to be flanked on this list by fellow titans like OpenAI, Meta, Amazon & Netflix and it means everything.”

Services offered by Flutterwave

Its platform enables merchants to accept payments in various currencies, including card and mobile money, streamlining trading in a dispersed area.

The company’s TIME100 Titan ranking underlines its supremacy in fintech. Its ability to scale quickly without sacrificing user attention is what makes it innovative.

The tale of Flutterwave is one of the audacious ideas realised in real life, and its expansion suggests Africa’s potential to become a global leader in technology.

Olugbenga Agboola’s leadership motivates a generation of entrepreneurs and demonstrates that African solutions can address global issues.

Moniepoint and Flutterwave are revolutionising Africa’s fintech ecosystem

Despite their differences, Moniepoint and Flutterwave are united in their mission to use technology to empower Africans.

Moniepoint provides solutions that stabilise and expand local economies while concentrating on the specific requirements of small companies.

On a larger scale, Flutterwave connects Africa to the rest of the globe through smooth transactions.

Both businesses take advantage of Nigeria’s spirit of entrepreneurship, and its TIME100 honours their capacity to transform obstacles into possibilities.
