At the Mobile World Congress 2024, Motorola unveiled a concept phone dubbed the “Adaptive Display” or “rollable concept phone”, marking a significant departure from traditional foldable designs. Here’s what we know about this innovative device

Design and functionality of Motorola

Marking a significant departure from traditional foldable designs, Motorola’s concept phone, dubbed the “Adaptive Display” or “rollable concept phone,” boasts a unique and innovative display. Unlike its foldable counterparts that hinge and crease, this phone features a rollable display that extends and retracts, which allows the device to transform between a compact, phone-sized form perfect for portability and a larger, tablet-like size ideal for gaming, watching videos, or multitasking tasks.

When folded, the phone offers a familiar smartphone experience with its 6.9-inch screen. The display seamlessly expands to a larger surface when extended, eliminating concerns about creases and providing a continuous viewing experience.

Additionally, the back of the phone is said to be made of soft, woven fabric material, adding a touch of unique design to the overall aesthetic.

Potential benefits

The rollable design sets this concept phone apart from traditional foldables. Unlike phones with hinges and creases, the rollable display eliminates a potential weak point, offering a continuous viewing experience when expanded. This lack of a crease addresses concerns about display degradation and provides a more seamless visual experience.

Furthermore, the adjustable screen size caters to user preferences and needs. When folded, it offers a compact and familiar phone form factor, ideal for portability and one-handed use. When extended, the display transforms into a larger, tablet-like size, perfect for immersive activities like gaming, watching videos, or multitasking. This versatility allows users to adapt the phone to their needs and situations.

Present developmental stage

It’s important to remember that the Motorola rollable phone is currently just a concept, showcasing intriguing possibilities for the future of smartphone design. While it is not commercially available, its unique rollable display and adjustable screen size represent a significant step forward.

However, the technology is still under development, and the final product might differ from this concept in terms of design, features, and functionalities.

Motorola’s rollable concept phone offers an intriguing look at how smartphones will be designed. It provides an alternative to conventional foldable phones with its distinct form factor and potential adaptability. It still needs to be determined whether and when this technology will be developed into a widely used product that fulfils consumer demands and solves possible issues like cost and durability.
