MTN deploys motorbikes to fast-track SIM, data package delivery in Johannesburg

MTN South Africa has launched a 2-hour motorbike delivery service for SIM cards and internet packages in Johannesburg, aiming to revolutionise how customers access 5G connectivity. This new service, announced on Monday, promises to eliminate long waits and queues, delivering fast internet solutions to customers’ doorsteps.

Fast and convenient 5G SIM delivery service

MTN’s Shesh@5G Motor Bike SIM Delivery Service lets users order SIM cards and home internet packages online and have them delivered by scooter in specified Johannesburg locations in two hours. This pilot project targets neighbourhoods like Midrand, Edenvale, and Fourways, using about 10 MTN-branded motorbikes to ensure speedy delivery.

Tania Ladopoulou, MTN South Africa’s general manager for online and telesales, highlighted the convenience this service brings, stating, “This is another ambition to bring seamless 5G Home connectivity to customers. As South Africa’s best and strong 5G network, we are focused on ensuring that our Home customers enjoy the best possible experience with the country’s most reliable and fastest 5G coverage. No more waiting 24 to 48 hours for delivery. No more standing in queues. With this new service, we are putting our customers first by delivering convenience, speed, and connection right to their doorstep.”

Once the SIM or internet package arrives, customers can self-RICA using the MTN app and connect within minutes, making it a seamless experience. This service is part of MTN’s push to make 5G home connectivity accessible and hassle-free.

Affordable 5G home Internet packages delivered fast

MTN’s Shesh@5G service is paired with affordable home internet packages to deliver high-speed connectivity. The Shesh@200 package costs R329 per month and includes 100GB of data at 5G speeds plus 100GB at 10Mbps LTE speeds. The Shesh@600 package, priced at R399 monthly, offers 300GB at 5G speeds and 300GB at 20Mbps LTE speeds. After consuming the initial data, speeds are throttled to 512Kbps for the rest of the month.

MTN emphasises that 5G speeds enable zero buffering during streaming, support multiple connected devices simultaneously, and improve online gaming and smart home device connectivity. These packages come with free routers and no cancellation penalties, making them attractive options for customers seeking reliable internet access.

Charles Molapisi, MTN South Africa CEO, described the delivery service as the “Uber of connectivity,” underscoring how it removes the need for customers to visit stores or wait days for delivery and activation. “There is no reason a customer who wants to buy a 5G fixed-wireless router needs to drive to a store and wait 24 hours for delivery and activation,” he said.

MTN plans to expand this service nationwide following the success of the Johannesburg pilot, reflecting the company’s commitment to innovative solutions that improve customer experience and accessibility.
