MTN Ghana, a leading telecommunications company, has surpassed its target for this year’s 21 Days of Y’ello Care program, further solidifying its position as a responsible corporate citizen.

Under the theme “Empowering Entrepreneurs to Unlock Growth and Job Creation for Communities,” the 2023 program involved MTN Ghana employee volunteers who trained indigenous entrepreneurs from all sixteen regions of Ghana.

The initial target for this year’s Y’ello Care was set at three thousand participants.

Exceeding Expectations: Engaging 4,070 Community Members

At the end of the program, the employee volunteers of MTN Ghana were thrilled to have dedicated their time to connect with and support 4,070 individuals within the community. The breakdown of beneficiaries for this year’s Y’ello Care is as follows:

Youth Led: 2,420

Women: 1,480

Differently abled: 170

Positive Impact and Learning Opportunities

Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Ghana, expressed her pride in the employees’ community engagement efforts and emphasized the company’s commitment to following up on the progress made by the entrepreneurs.

Wiafe stated, “We are proud of the work our employees did in the community, and we look forward to coming back soon to do a follow-up of how this has improved their businesses.”

Daniel Boateng, one of the employee volunteers, shared his perspective on the experience: “Having the opportunity to engage with these entrepreneurs was not only enjoyable but also a valuable learning experience for us. By sharing our knowledge with the beneficiaries, we were also exposed to new ways of doing things.”

Mavis Akosua Mensah, a beautician from Nsawam, expressed her excitement about the Y’ello Care program, which equipped her and fellow entrepreneurs with information and skills to enhance their businesses. Mensah particularly appreciated the session on improving customer service, stating, “I really learned a lot about dealing with difficult customers.”

Gratitude and Transformation

Cecilia Amankwah, the Country Director of Engage Now Africa, one of the program’s partner organizations, expressed her gratitude to MTN Ghana for their efforts in transforming and empowering Ghanaian youth, women, and individuals with disabilities. She highlighted the significance of the free training provided through the program, which would typically be unaffordable on the open market. Amankwah described the experience as truly transformational for the beneficiaries.

MTN Ghana collaborated with several organizations across the country to carry out its annual 21 Days of Y’ello Care. These partners included Node 8, Duapa Werkspace, Eastern Hub, Ghana Chamber of Entrepreneurs with Disability, Agrico hub, Wan-hive, Northern Innovation hub, Dansyn Iso hub, Trisolace Company Limited, and Noni Hub.

Showcasing Entrepreneurs and Supporting Local Products

On the final day of the program, MTN Ghana hosted a product showcase at its head office, featuring entrepreneurs who had participated in the Y’ello Care program. MTN employees engaged with these entrepreneurs and took the opportunity to purchase some of their products, demonstrating support for local businesses and grassroots entrepreneurship.

This year’s 21 Days of Y’ello Care program aligns with MTN’s 5-year strategic priority to support local grassroots entrepreneurs and assist them in developing and marketing their products. By investing their time and resources in community service every June for 21 days, MTN employees actively contribute to the company’s mission of supporting local communities and fostering sustainable development.

The MTN Y’ello Care Program was initiated by MTN Group in 2007 with the aim of encouraging MTN employees to dedicate their time and resources to community service for 21 days each June. Since its inception, this impactful initiative has positively influenced the lives of millions of people and communities in the regions where MTN operates.

By empowering entrepreneurs, particularly youth, women, and individuals with disabilities, MTN Ghana strives to unlock economic growth and job creation within local communities. Through their continuous efforts and collaborative partnerships, MTN Ghana aims to foster a sustainable and inclusive future for all Ghanaians.

The story of MTN Ghana’s 2023 Y’ello Care program is a testament to the company’s dedication as a responsible corporate citizen, leveraging its resources and expertise to drive positive change. By investing in the potential of entrepreneurs and fostering community development, MTN Ghana is actively contributing to the growth and prosperity of Ghana.
